• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

ST vs RT Butt Room?

I realize that there are many differences between the ST and RT. We are looking to get into a spyder for riding two up as inexpensively as possible, so we can see if it is for us, and if not, then we will not be taking a bath when we sell it. We did the same when first deciding on two wheels, and bought a C10 Concours before moving up to a GL1800 wing.

The question I do have is how much difference in room for two up does an ST with a backrest have to an RT? We are willing to forego all other creature comforts. We have been to the dealers in the area and none seem to have an ST so we can test sit.

The RTs come with a useable touring saddle. It's got some w i d t h to it! :D
The saddle on the ST just does not belong in the same conversation...
Sorry!

Gotta say..!!

:agree: coming from a wing and concours your going to find the RT more to your liking. The ST is something in between a sporty RS/RSS and the RT. You can get custom seats but they don't come cheap. You could go for the RT base model with the triple similar to your previous rides but the ST still has the high rpm v-twin...choices choices...:banghead:

The frame dimensions are the same so its a give and take. You REALLY need to sit on them and decide for yourself.
Personally, I was not comfortable at all riding an RT. I flat out can't stand having the handlebars in my lap, especially when turning.

OR you can get an ST and save some money. Buy an after market seat, we purchased an ultimate which is much wider than the oem seat and not to terrebly expensive. I also purchased the driver backrest, which is really comfy and we find the ST to be a lot more sporty and fun to ride than the RT IMHO. We did demo ride a 14 RT and it was just not us.

I think the consensus is try both. It is personal choice. I had an RSS but my wife did not like to ryde on it. She is much more comfortable on my 2014 RT.

When I first sat on an RT I was disappointed in the seating posture. I was too far forward and had to raise my whole leg to brake. The salesman said the ST seat was a little further back. I went to sit on one and agreed. It was a much more natural posture for me. To each their own. What I dont like about the seat is that its cloth and if it gets wet, so does your butt. It also seems to absorb heat in the sun. I would like to get a corbin some day because that is what I had on my last bike. I loved it.

Actually, I think the C10 equates with the ST and the RT is more like the Wing. The C10 Concours is a 996CC inline 4 that does not really produce power under 5,000 and redlines at 10,000 Definite sportbike heritage small flat seat, tight for 2 large people, buzzy, but probably the best bang for the buck out there for 2 up touring. The Wing on the other hand is like a barcolounger on wheels, Great seats, silky smooth 1832CC flat 6 that produces torque from idle up to its 6,300 redline where it promptly falls on its face because of the rev limiter. It is still a hoot to push through the twisties though.

The reason for the question is that I do not know yet if I will like 3 wheels, and only want to spend the minimum possible to find out. Even renting one for a weekend would not be long enough, and considering that would cost me around a grand, that is out of the question.
If I go to 3 wheels I would like to get in as cheap as possible, so in any case what I buy i would only keep one year. If I like it, I would bump up to an RT, If not I would sell it. Hopefully for not much less than I paid for it.

Looking at various postings, it appears that most Spyders are on the same frame with some variations. Given that I want to spend as little as possible, should I also look at an older RS? What in performance or seating would I be giving up over the ST? I realize that the RT is in a different league, but I do not want to drop that much $$$$ until I know I like 3 wheels.

Thanks for all the responses so far,

We have an ST. You sit a bit further back on the RT. I think the ST actually has more room for two.

I have an ST-L

Search the internet and find some closeout 14's ! I got mine for $17,300.00 and the MSRP is almost $25K. The rebates are even higher now !

On the SEAT:
First of all I am 59 with a bad back, nerve damage in my legs (so I dont need arteries cut off by pressure from a bad seat), I am overweight so I have a big ass, my "package" is of ample size........... I am VERY happy with the stock ST seat. It feels as if it was fit for my rear and crotch. You sit up fairly straight on the ST. The seat has ample cushion, it is not real wide in the crotch area so you dont feel like your legs are forced into a spread...it just seems to be very comfortable for me so I dont plan on changing it. The passenger part of the seat appears to be of more than adequate size.

Suggestion: I would never ride a passenger without a backrest. The rests with arms on them may limit the size of the passenger or cause other issues, so I would suggest a plain backrest. I like the CanAm backrest but it is damn expensive.

You really need to sit on a seat....search dealers, search here see if someone with an ST lives near where you are. And as others have said you can always have a seat custom made for you too....I did on a Honda ST 1300.

Hope this helps a little
