Shifting into Neutral

I have a ST, just 300 miles on it.


When I stop the bike, and I want to turn on the parking break, it does not downshift into neutral using the downshift control. I apply the break, but it does not shift into neutral.


I have to lightly press the R button, then the neutral kicks in, even if I don't intend to go into reverse.


I am not overly concerned, because I found that this works, and discovered it by trial and error, but I am wondering whether this is normal.


Has anyone else encountered this problem?

When going from 1st to neutral it must be a quick press and release. If you hold the shift lever it will think you are trying to do a double shift and is waiting for you to press the "R" button.

Parking Brake

​When you slow down or stop, your Spyder will automatically downshift to first gear. If you want it to go to neutral you have to manually shift to neutral. It is perfectly fine to apply the parking brake when in first gear as long as you are completely stopped.

I figured out that when stopped in 1st gear, I have to double tab the downshift in order to go to neutral. When I first got the spyder, I was only tapping once and it wouldn't ever down shift. I thought something was wrong until I finally figured it out.

And...as someone else helped me....to a quick tap/slap on that paddle shifter. It shifts much better that a press or a momentary hold. :thumbup:

You should not have to double tap the shifter to go to neutral from first gear. That is not normal. If yours does complain to your dealer.

Mine does the same thing. Sometimes I press the R and the downshift quickly and it goes to Neutral. I'll see what the quick tap does from 1st. I figured I wasn't doing something correct!

You should not have to double tap the shifter to go to neutral from first gear. That is not normal. If yours does complain to your dealer.

:agree: And you should not have to press the reverse button first either. If you press reverse and tap the downshift from 1st gear it should go to reverse.

I had the same problem when I purchased my 14 st ltd. Now when stopped in first gear I hold down the break pedal and quickly tap the paddle shifter back. Sometimes it takes more than one try and the neutral light come's on. Mine seems to work better with time. Hope yours also works better with time. You can mention this at your 600 mile service. I'm sure you won't be the first to inquire about this issue. Good

Thanks everyone - now it's working, a quick tap gets me into Neutral. I guess that I was holding it down for too long.

normally when you turn it off, just apply the parking brake and leave it in gear. Then turn it off. When you restart it, it will automatically shift into neutral.

I found that putting it in neutral before turning off the engine my bike is easier to push around the garage. There is some transmission drag if I leave it in gear. In neutral you don't have to step on the brake pedal to start it.

Yup, quick tap on down shift hits neutral easily. I was obviously to slow on the paddle! Thanks for the tip!!!!!:thumbup:

My Spyder model is at the bottom of the page. Signature area. I would imagine that if a manual tranny would not go to neutral would be a more serious problem.
