Car rim vs Motorcycle rim

This was brought up in another thread and I believe it needs it's own thread. When mounting a car tire on a motorcycle rim these are the reasons it is not recommended.

Does anybody remember who posted those pictures; I lost my computer that had them... :opps:

The Spyder rim does not look like a car rim to me. More like the GW rim above. Look at the huge bead humps just like the motorcycle rim above. Car rims don't have that. There is no dropwell either. Only difference I see is the cut down on the sprocket side to allow for an angled Schrader valve to be used.

Interesting..!!

Tire size and patterns are not the only thing to consider. A lot goes into tire design and uses. There are reasons for stating for motorcycle use on the tires we use. Granted there are a lot of car tires in use on motorcycles and doing well but its good to know the why...

 I'd still like to see some actual measurements on that rim...

It's a good idea to give this issue it's own space; Thanks, Dave!

 Michael,
You're moving away from the facts of the discussion, and into an area that we call "personal attacks"... :lecturef_smilie:

REALLY

 Michael,

And if there is anyone here who knows how to " PERSONALLY ATTACK SOMEONE "....it's YOU, because you are the expert in this :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:.......that and denying you just did it :lecturef_smilie: :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:.............Mike

;) Not an attack; just an admonition...
If we can stick to the facts of the issue; nobody's feelings get hurt, and we all can learn something. :2thumbs:

Enough this is a fact thread if you have some FACTS to share please do. Anecdotal evidence is not fact. nojoke

Who would you (COULD you ) report it to?
That's a bit like calling the State Police to report an accident, and casually mentioning that you had hardly been drinking at all that day! nojoke

Folks have been running automotive tires for years now... I've not seen any reports in here about blowing out a bead. It might have a lot to do with the light loading, and low pressures.
(Just a guess!)

When I went to Allen Tire to have them put on my Yokohama I specifically asked the guy if the bead on the rim was motorcycle or car and if there would be a problem.

He said the rim was like a car with "custom rims" and that the bead was a car bead. He said no issue at all with that tire on the rim. And he said he is very aware of the difference between a car rim and a motorcycle and the he would never put a car tire on a motorcycle rim due to liability. And you know California and liability!.

Bob

THIS IS TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY

The only failure if you can call it that was Lamont was running an Arachnid tire and it spun on the rim.

:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:............And the Kicker is the " ARACHNID " was designed specifically for the Spyder :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:...Mike

I hope you ARE right bob but the picture of the Spyder rim I showed at the beginning had distinct motorcycle qualities. I would love some one who is changing tires or near a tireless rim to do the measurements that the cad drawing is showing on a Spyder rim and post it here in this thread . That is the only true way to settle this debate. As I already have said when my Kenda goes I have a Kuhmo ready to replace it and this thread is just a primer for all to know. There are lots of "Darkside" riders in both the GW and Spyder world most have nothing bad to say about it. I am all for informed choices.
