Back 2015 at Spyderfest in Mo. I was out on a ride, and it happened three times the first TWO it re-started after removing the KEY ... The third time I called Pitbull, I explained I was stuck at a gas station they advised to move it as far from the station as I could and then turn the ignition on-off 5 times rapidly ..... that cleared it .... I immed. drove to the dealer ( Pitbull ), and the next day some Techs from BRP swapped it for a new one..... three years later I had the module CANCELLED and I removed it .... good luck .... Mike

I had the D.E.S.S error happen to me twice. I got the dealer to replace the D.E.S.S. module and reprogram the keys twice. Both times they were under warranty, I also started a thread D.E.S.S. Key Code Again!!!! on 8/13/2015 ( look at post # 3 on this thread for the link), the thread has some very useful info.
Have the dealership open up a CASE with BRP. It is covered under warranty (OEM and B.E.S.T.).

Hi Deanna,
It happened again I've replaced the DESS module years ago after the original failed. Recently I had 2 DESS moments ( at the same gas station??) and I'm leaving for a weeks long vacation on the Spyder. Any thoughts???
Has anyone with a newer DESS had a failure???

HI Lew,
Here are my thoughts/ suggestions:
Have you tried Turning the ignition switch ON/OFF immediately and DO NOT LET THE SYSTEM SHUT DOWN for 4 to 5 cycles?
Have you tried taking both keys with you and walking away ( about 50 to 60 feet) and waiting about 1/2 hour?
Also, Do you carry/or attach any other keys( house, car) to your spyder key ring?
If you do, have other keys( house, car, etc) that are attached to your spyder key ring, remove them.
Are there any other cell phones or magnetic cards( credit cards, ATM etc.) placed near the ignition switch?
If there are any cell phones or magnetic cards placed near the ignition switch, that could cause the D.E.S.S error.
BRP has had cases where a cell phone, or magnetic card, placed near the ignition switch which could cause this. BRP also said "any other devices that may emit some type of frequency could cause the D.E.S.S error."
Also, anything that is electronic will interfere with the ignition switch, antenna, or D.E.S.S.
Also, this is per the ROADSTER 2014-015 D.E.S.S Error Displayed in Cluster_ 000104494_TST61Y014S10_en
Problem: Intermittently, the ignition key may not be recognized causing the unit not to start. The D.E.S.S. ERROR message will be displayed in the cluster.
Solution: Replace the D.E.S.S module. Program the keys using B.U.D.S.
Technical Explanation: When the D.E.S.S module sends its signal to the antenna to read the key chip, the radio frequency produced by the antenna is too strong and the key chip is saturated. This saturation changes the data transmitted back to the D.E.S.S. module causing bad lecture of the key chip.
All of the above is in the D.E.S.S Key Code AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! thread, that I started:
https://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/...KEY-CODE-AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me know if you have any other questions on the above?
Deanna

Find someone with BUDS software and Mega Tech license to turn it off completely.

Or any electronic device that is near the ignition switch the problem will occur.

Being that the DESS incident occurred at the same gas station ----- the pumps may use Bluetooth or RF to make the card readers function??? IDK

Yes, I installed a New module twice and still got that message. After the second module replacement, I changed my Antenna and so far there are no more issues to report.
And I have posted the bulletin several times on this site - should be easy to find.
Mine was intermittent, but it would always start up after turning off and on again.

Hi triker,
What is involved in replacing the antenna???? I'm sure the mirrors have to come off What do you think about shielding the key???
Thanks in advance, Lew l

FYI, my charging base station phone holder has to be turned off to make the "check key" go away. No problems charging if the bike is started.
I too thought about a cover over the key to reduce outside frequency interference. Just saying, there should be a simple home made shielding device for testing when this condition occurs.
If a gas station pump caused 2 check key codes, maybe push the bike away and turn the key back on.

One of the best things done to my RTL. Had a regular key cut that is on my always in my pocket key ring. Wish I knew someone in your area that could do it.

On my RT , you have to remove the cover on the switch on the top . Basically twists off. Mine was tight to get off. The antenna is mounted to the ignition switch on the top and wire runs down to the Dess module.
You have to remove the Frunk to get to the DESS module (My Preference)
I removed both Headlights to get to the ignition switch. There are two bolts that hold the switch to the bike on a plate.
Now there is more but I think you have the idea what I did so far. It is a small project to do.
I am sure there are other ways of doing it ,but I didn't want to take the whole top end off to get to the switch.
Shielding , IMO may work , but feel it may create more problems with starting the bike.
Myself I wanted to keep the security feature of the Spyder , so the Antenna was the last my last option before I turned off the DESS thru BUDS.
Not sure about a shield but think your better leave it alone..

I'll take some alum. foil and cover the key next time. Only a partial covering to keep the chip from getting "saturated " and/or blocking outside RF interference. Nothing permanent!!

You state DESS MODULE!
Did they also replace the ANTENNA?
If not, that would be the first suspect.

Hi AJ
When I replaced the DESS module ( myself ) I did not replace the antenna. I did move it down about 1/4" by just pushing it by hand as I recall. If the problem is " key saturation" ----- a bit of foil over the key should attenuate the signal. I did a 300 mile ryde today with fuel stops and rest /picture stops and no DESS problems. No foil was used----- I kept it all in the hat
