    Default Riding Boots

Another thread on this forum got me remembering something from my early days of riding and I thought it might save someone a bit of anguish should they experience my history.

Back when I was a teenager and had my first real motorcycle I had a paper route. I would fill my canvas bags with rolled papers and alternate between each side. So that the bag did not move while riding I sat on the crossover part of the bag.

One day, while whizzing along, I had almost reached the end of my route so the bag was virtually empty. Suddenly and without warning the bag was snatched out from under me and the rear tire locked up. I was caught off guard and ended up vaulting over the handlebars and running like hell to stay upright while my bike crashed in the street behind me. The bag had gotten sucked up in the spokes of the rear tire. Fortunately I was not going very fast and didn't fall down but.....

I ran so fast my boots came off. Yup, I ran right out of them and ended up skinning up both feet on the pavement (fortunately, again, not too badly). I was wearing what we then called stadium boots - the kind you just slip on.

I learned that day that if I was to protect my feet and ankles I need to wear something I could not kick off AND, if they had laces, be sure to wrap the excess around the boot and tie it off so as not to hook the brake or shifter.

    Lesson learned.

Isadora Duncan was killed when a long silk scarf she wore around he neck was caught in the rear spoke of her car and she was strangled.

Gotta be careful about what's hanging down when you ride!

When riding I wear my work boots. 10" lace ups with composite toe. I keep the laces short and tight. May not be too stylish but they are practical.

My wife wears a pair of lace up boots for women. Hers are somewhat stylish as well as practical.

Yup. I am always careful to tuck 'em in (gently) before riding.
