I'm just wondering if there may be former shipmates on here, and not know it. I was on the USS Hunley AS-31 from 67-69, and then shore duty at Damneck VA tip 71. Any hits?

Without the History of Assignments page (NAVPERS 1070/605), it's difficult to remember the dates, but the names are still with me:

And I enjoyed nearly every month of it.
We used to frequent the Oceana EM club from 69-71, and I was in Charleston (67-69) on a sub tender for nukie boats. Close, but no cigar.

Anybody serve on Greasy George? As a Marine the George Clymer dropped me off along with several hundred of my fellow Marines on a beach in Chu Lai Vietnam in August 1965. She has quite a battle history going back to WWII.

I don't remember all the ships we served with way back then but USS Orleck was also in Chu Lai many times in '65. We probably did shore bombardment for you guys at one time or another.

I remember one operation we had a Naval Gunfire spotter(?) with us. I don't know the gun size but I do recall they were accurate as hell. I never heard the shots but did hear the swoosh and the explosions. Scared the hell out of me. Pretty close.
The George Clymer was a troop transport. I think the dropped us and left after a day or two.
I had a VA appt today with a pulmonary surgeon. About my age. We started comparing notes and discovered we were both at Nha Be in Vietnam-he a young doctor at the time. He said I was only the second person he'd ever met who had been at Nha Be. Any others here?

The Orleck, like all other Gearing class destroyers, had either 2 or 3 double barrel 5"38's naval rifles. If we were firing HE they made a hole big enough to drive a Jeep into.
