Another Newbie Question
I know this has been discussed before, but I cant find the specific answer I am looking for. I have seen posts mentioning the difference in the speed in MPH showing on the speedometer, versus the actual speed the Spyder is going. What is the difference in MPH, and is it faster or slower? I have a 2012 RT SM5.

Pick a number..!!
you can plug in your gps and compare but your results will have nothing to do with mine. Lots of variables to consider so find yours and go with that...

Good advice, and this may sound stupid, but I dont use GPS. Got it on my phone but I usually know where im going, and if im not sure, Im pretty good at figuring it out pretty quickly. Guess I will have to get it out and use it. As usual, thanks for the help.

I love ryding the Beast and I usually too busy enjoying the ryde. My wife and I will just get out and she will tell me turn here or turn there. Next thing you we are in banjo country. But I always seem to know how to get back home without the GPS. We both enjoy the heck out of going wherever. The rydes the thing. Not the destination.

On the Fat White Chick, the difference varies with speed. 35 mph or less, very little difference. At 60 and above the speedo reads 2 mph or so higher than the GPS.
As said before, too many variables to make any difference. Go ride and stay safe.

ALL
ALL speedo's read from 2 - 3 mph faster than the vehicle is traveling....
i believe i read someplace many years ago that manufacturers do this so they don't get sued.... duh, like anyone would be that crazy to sue for............ ahhhh, never mind...

From past discussions the speedo shows your speed on the order of 2 to 3 mph faster than actual in the 70 mph area. By Federal law a speedometer may NOT show you going slower than your actual speed. That's why the mfr's always err on the showing faster side.
Search for postings with my ID and 'speedometer'. I think I quoted the pertinent parts of the Federal reg.

Don't place too much stock in those signs! If you were trying to get people to slow down wouldn't you be inclined to make them think they're driving faster than they actually are? The ones on I-84 in Oregon are notoriously different than my speedometers.

The best way to check a speedometer on any vehicle is to go a steady 60 mph on a highway with mileage signs. Each tenth of a mile is 6 seconds at 60 or a mile in one minute, so get a stopwatch, go one mile and see how long it takes. If it takes a bit longer than a minute, your speedometer reading is higher than actual, and vice versa if you pass one mile in less than a minute.
I read somewhere that speedometer manufacturers try to err on them reading a bit high, probably because their lawyers told them to...

Mine indicates about 2 mph higher than I'm actually going at highway speeds.
Oddly enough, my Lexus RX350 does the same but my Camry Hybrid is just about right on.

another newbie question
The Spyder on my '14 RT L showed 103, GPS showed 98.
Basically as previously stated, the faster you drive, the farther off it is.
Lightnin' LeeRoy only has 4K on, so that is all I've given her her so far.
More to follow come May or June

....................Contact your local Law Enforcement Agency ( in person is better ) and ask them where and when they will have a Stationary Radar set -up. Almost every agency has one ......Then just drive by it and check it yourself.....................My 2014 RT reads 1 mph fast at 30.........2 mph at 60 etc.
