Has anyone put a cargo carrier on their trailer hitch? Wondering what it looks like, and if it made the byke drive any different? Thinking it might be a cost effective way to NOT have to buy a trailer. Pics if you have them!

I have not but keep in mind that the weight will be limited to only 40lbs doing this. At least that's what the max tongue weight should be.

I just installed one on my Goldwing/CSC Trike today. It is Universal Motorcycle Trailer Hitch Rack from Big Bike Parts. The quality, fit and finish exceeded my expectations. It's not very big but I have a Kuryakyn Bag that fits perfectly. Unlike the Spyder, my trailer hitch is attached to the sprung bike frame. My plan is to carry bulky items like rain gear and bike cover in that bag. It has a 2 pin quick-disconnect so I can quickly pull the rack, bag and all, off the bike for overnight motel security. My only potential concern is the possibility of dragging the rack on steep driveway transitions. Knowing that, I think that can be eliminated by transitioning driveways at an angle. I have been looking and considering one of these for a couple of years. At one time they were about $100.00. But like everything else, the price has gone up. It was now closer to $150.00 by the time I paid tax. Hope this helps..... Jim

This is the Doc Humprey's rack that he used to sell. I love it. In the picture from the rear, it appears to conceal my license plate, but this was before having my air bag replaced on my F3T. I also used this on my 2014 RT. Works great and holds enough clothing for 2people for 5-6 days easily.

I love this idea. How does the heat from the exhaust effect things. Does the exhaust blow back on the contents mounted on the hitch?

There is a nut that I used through the hitch where the ball would be, and it also had 4 U bolts that held it in place.

This increases the unsprung weight of the rear tire of you bike and will adversely affect handling. Not recommended for performance oriented riders.

On Goldwings the hitch is part of the sprung assembly so the road compliance of the wheel is not effected.

Mine had a plate that deflected the exhaust below the rack.

Good idea in theory. As has been said the hitch is mounted solid to the swing arm so there is zero cushioning from road vibration and bumps. That means anything fragile is going to get mashed. You only want to carry very durable, and preferably light weight, objects in it, because they will bounce.

The Doc Humphrey's unit is no longer available. Doc departed the site, along with all his products, several years ago. I don't like the way the Pak-It unit hangs far behind the hitch. That'll just increase the bounce it is subjected to. If you're handy get a sheet of aluminum deck plate and drill it for a bolt to replace the hitch ball as well as a couple of saddle bolts to secure it to the hitch arms. Then drill it or add eye bolts to fasten by tie downs something like a duffle bag onto the deck plate

Idaho is correct. In the above photo the distance the rack hangs out over the hitch will increase the torque load on the hitch. The 40/45 lb load recommendation for the hitch load is ON TOP of the ball. Use a fish scale and attach it to the back of your loaded rack and see how much down pressure it actually exerts on the hitch. It may surprise you.

That is exactly why I keep heavier things INSIDE the bike and will use the hitch rack for light, bulky things. The total weight of my loaded hitch bag, including the rack is less than 15 pounds......

The Rivco rack is essentially the same size as the Universal rack I bought, 11 X 16 inches. They are each constructed a little differently. But size, function, and weight are about the same. You can Google them both to get details..... Jim

I have often ridden with the rack on mine. Once I get to my hotel or cabin, I unload the bag (which only contains clothes), and leave the rack on the bike. It does not affect the handling at all on the bike. Now, I've added a Givi box on a rack at the rear of my 2016 F3 Limited, and I can definitely tell it is there when cornering. It will also be coming off once we check into a room.
