Frunk cable off/broken at the ign switch! Any fix suggestions?

My frunk cable came off or broke at the ignition switch. It's okay at the frunk latch. I sure don't want to take the handlebars and everything else that goes with it off, but I know there is no other way. Any suggestions?

Speaking about my model since I have no idea what model you own, I went thru the RT's headlights and took the 4 bolts off at the handlebars to get to the switch.

In fact, I have to do it again at some point, since I mixed up the cables on the switch.

IMHO the ignition switch (ie frunk cable connection) should not have been used to do anything other than start and stop your engine. Soon after I bought my 2014 RT, I dis-connected that cable and made a separate new cable to open the Frunk. It has worked flawlessly ever since. After reporting here how I did it, many others have followed. Do a search, there are many pics/videos of how it's done, and it costs about $2.00. Good Luck .... Mike

Like BlueKnight911, I refuse to use the key to open the frunk and the seat. I have read too many "my cable broke" horror posts, so like Mike, I attached wires to the latches and have a small black pull on the ends. I tuck them where they are not noticed.

I don't know if you can accomplish my method without already having the frunk open, but here is how I did my emergency release:

Reading other posts about this, there are a variety of ways to do it. I don't think any one way is right or wrong, just pick whichever works best for your comfort level.

I replaced my seat cable once, what a bloody mess it was getting that darn thing back on the switch!! Never again, next time, fishing line!!!

..... Yes quite correct, I haven't looked at a FRUNK latch for a V-twin Spyder in many years .... but the mechanism looks exactly like my SEAT latch on my 14 RT ...... Mike

I have a 2017 Spyder RT Limited and the front two latches are not working. The frunk latch is stuck in the locked position with the frunk open, so the lid just sits on top of the locked latch. When I press the key in and turn it, I don't feel it pulling any wires like I could before on my 2010 model I had. Is the 2017 electronic? Any ideas? I tried putting a screwdriver in the front latch and turning the key to see if it would open and it would not. I looked under the seat and that one is held in the open position with a zip tie so the seat can be lifted without turning the key. When I turn the key with the seat open, the latch cable does not move. I want to look at the cable assembly under the ignition, but I don't know where to start or maybe this is a known issue? This IS pretty much a Well Know issue cobra, and one that has been asked and answered more than once over the years.

Despite putting a great deal of effort into collating all the various threads into just a few consolidated & helpful threads, there's still HEAPS of other threads discussing these frunk releases cobra, so it's ((ALWAYS! ) worth doing a search first & having a bit of a read on what's been posted already - there's not much about Spyders that hasn't been at least mentioned, if not asked, discussed at length, and answered comprehensively over the 15+ years the Forum's been around! There's even a few threads that mention & sometimes even detail exactly how to access the ignition ends of those cables you're asking about.... some that suggest going in from the headlight end, after you remove the headlights of course; while others that suggest a few different ways of exposing the connectors under the ignition by removing the dash &/or various panels. None of the suggested approaches could be called 'quick' or even 'easy', but there's definitely ways, and what you're after can be done!

Just type 'Frunk' into the Search field up toward the Top Right corner of the page; tick the box in the drop-down list that says 'Search Titles Only'; submit the search; and settle in for some light reading

You should be able to get some idea of which threads will help most from their titles, but there are many where the OP's haven't really made much effort to briefly ask their question &/or tell us what the thread is about so you might need to check the contents of those threads out by opening them and having a bit of a read - but you'll probably learn heaps that you may never have even realised you truly needed to know if you do that!

with Peter ..... When I was a Vendor, I added quite a few EMERGENCY FRUNK RELEASES for customers. It solved what IMHO was a DUMB idea for opening that latch. With regard to opening the FRUNK when the cable/ignition switch has stopped working, you'll need to have a strong flashlight to do this (like an LED light); have a towel; have an 18" thin metal rod or wooden dowel. You can lift the right-side frunk hood by quite a bit (without breaking it); stuff the towel in to keep it raised; and you should be able to see the LATCH MECHANISM. Push the rod in and push the LATCH ARM. This will release the FRUNK. It would assist you to look at the parts Fiche' for your year and model RT. It will show you that LATCH in detail, and where the ARM is positioned .... Good luck ....Mike .....

The easy way is to take the ignition switch apart, but that is a chore, putting that cable in from underneath without taking it apart can be done, but make sure you have your bandage box handy! Ask me how I know!! A downloadable service manual is your friend!!
