    Default Reverse Actuator Recall RTS

Has anyone had this replaced? After reading this recall info, I am leary of riding the bike. Thoughts anyone??

If you are concerned... take it to the dealer ASAP!!! In the meantime, just watch it when you hit reverse or when you shift down. Mine's in the dealer already so I'll make them aware of it.

WOW --- I didn't know there was a recall. I guess I'd better check with my dealer.

My reverse actuator gave out on the Spyderfest 2011 trip to Cuba. I had Cowtown look at it and they said I needed a new reverse actuator but did not have one in stock. I then had them call my dealer in PA and have them order the actuator then call me when it came in.
Well, I just got back from PA, yesterday, where they did replace the actuator.
Driving without your reverse is no big deal. You just need to be careful where you park.

I am not aware of the specific recall but I had mine replaced yesterday.
The original had a ruptured boot which permitted gunk and junk to get into the mechanism. This eventually made it impossible to shift.

    Hal,
Call and check with your dealer first, as my dealer said this recall "does not apply to your unit" so there He advised that this was relesed to the dealers back in January, so if your bike went in for service they should have checked your VIN against the effected units and should have taken the appropriate action. Key words here being SHOULD HAVE.

Dealers usually (key word here ) get notification of recalls around that time. Customers get it later... Like RL (InspectorGadget) said, you can call your dealer and inquire.

Is this the same one that was talked about several months ago that only affected the SM5 models and not the SE5 models??? Just curious.

    Lightbulb

Here is the title of the Recall and the date it was sent, hope it helps :

    April 6th 2011
Re: Reverse Actuator – Can Am™ Spyder™ RT SM5 roadster

    BRP
    Date: April 6th, 2011

    What is the potential problem?

While downshifting, it may be possible to inadvertently engage reverse without depressing the reverse button, due to a defective reverse actuator cable. If this happens while vehicle is moving forward, the rear wheel could lock and the engine could stall. If this happens while vehicle is stopped or moving forward, vehicle could back up. This
condition may increase the risk of a crash possibly resulting in injury or death.

    What should you do?

Call an authorized BRP Can-Am Spyder Roadster dealer and make an appointment to have your vehicle inspected and repaired if necessary. We will validate proper operation of the reverse actuator and if defective, replace the reverse actuator assembly. This work will be performed at no charge to you.

There are important precautions you should take until this recall has been performed:

    • Be aware that it is possible that you inadvertently engage reverse while downshifting. Stay alert and make sure, while downshifting, to check that the gearbox position in the multifunction gauge does not show "R" before releasing the clutch lever. Be particularly careful when releasing the clutch lever after downshifting into 1st gear.

    • Pass on this information to any other driver of your vehicle.

Once again, this only applies to a small number of very early 2011 RTs. Of these, only a handful (reportedly four) escaped the factory before being repaired. Letters were sent to owners at the time of the recall. Spyder owners need to get the details of recalls from the NHTSA site before they panic. Not every recall applies to every single model or vehicle produced.
