Default propper way to check the oil on a 14 rt

i know the bike should be at running temp. and also on a level surface, my question is does the dip stick need to be screwed all the way in then backed out, of is it measured with the stick just sitting on top of the opening for it. thanks

And don't forget you are supposed to get it to operating temperature and then let it idle for 10 minutes.

    Default oil check

you have to lock your engine up running it without oil to get it ready to check it, go figure

Remember, unlike the V-twins, in the ACE 1330 engine you're dealing with an one that doesn't use oil. The dipstick also has a substantial indicator range below the Min mark to give an indication of how much juice is in the engine. The normal operating range is #3 in the picture. Right now, cold my engine with 5.3 qt reads a bit over the min level mark, #2 in the pic. For a 1330 engine to run the risk of locking up while getting it to operating temperature for a correct check there would have to be catastrophic failure, or the operator would have to be so clueless about routine maintenance checks that they would be a hazard to anything other than a round steel ball. Nope, when you finish a ride and the engine is at full temp you check the oil. Then you are all ready for the next ride.

you don't have to tighten the dip stick down all the way when checking your oil. Just make sure your stick is in all the way by rotating a little bit back and forth to make sure it's bottomed out (you'll see what I mean when you do it) . The reason is, that twisting and locking the stick down doesn't make it go in any further. So, just push it in all the way and pull it out to check it. By the way, I only run 5 qt.'s in mine. That's all you need and the oil level will always be midway between the min. and max. mark on the stick on the 14RTS SE6. Happy trails........

i looked into the operators guide and it didn't say if the dip stick should be all the way in, or at least i didn't see it. now as far as not helping people that don't read the guide, i have never complained about anyone's post other than a personal attack on me, so that being said i think you should re think being on a site where people try to help others with problems and questions. if someone has a motor tap and wants to know what might be the problem, would you say " i am not going to help someone that has not taken the can am mechanics class "

    Default I don't get it

Why would you spend your time responding to a post if you have nothing valuable or supportive to add?

    Default As I see it..!!

from small engines (lawn mowers, pumps, etc) to our own spyders, if the dip stick screws in ... you measure by screwing it in. If it is a press fit well you just push it in all the way. Why...has been a question I have not seen a good answer to. But they continue to do it this way and we will have to measure it by screwing it in... sight glass....

    Default Leaks?

Having a sight glass could just add one more place for an oil leak that would be hard to repair. And if the glass gets dirty or cloudy on the inside how would you clean it? Back to the dipstick. JMO.

If you don't have something good to say you should be quiteI have looked in the manual and not found something and someone has posted the page number. Some people can't relate to reading and comprehension. I'll shut up now!

    Rough day, Carl?
We try to help each other around here.
Yes; there are always going to be times, when you KNOW that the person asking the question, hasn't looked in the manual.
But we smile... and answer them anyway!

    THEN...
    we post this!

    Love ya John!

Default My 1330 engines I screw oil dipstick all the way in

I check oil level in my 1330cc F3S (& also 1330 RT previous) engines cold, or hot after running, makes no difference as far as oil level showing.
Note: BRP bulletin in 2014 for the 1330 only requires 5 qts of oil.
With 5 qts of oil, oil on dipstick shows at middle knob.
PMK had a great idea in 2014 to clean dipstick/markings with rubbing alcohol.
Then use black permanent marker on lower part of dip stick & markings; makes seeing oil on dipstick much easier.
I use full synthetic oil (Amsoil 10w-40) in all my Spyders/motorcycles for years.
Change oil & oil filter 4-5,000 miles.
Works for me, others may do it different.
    Enjoy your rydes!
    Jim

Just made appointment for 1st service on 2014 Can Am RT. Asked dealer if they could use full synthetic when changing oil. No one has ever asked for it before but would do it if that's what I wanted. Go with Amsoil, pretty sure saw it on the display there.

It is in the manual (Step 7 in the pic) but 2dogs' comment is essentially correct. Completely screwing in the dipstick ensures a tight seal and prevents any oil weep over the top of the oil filler tube but doesn't lower the dipstick any farther in the tube that would make a measurable difference in reading the oil level. It is probably written the way it is to ensure Nunzio the Knuckle Dragger doesn't just run the dipstick in until the bottom of the stick cap meets the top of the oil filler tube because that would result in quite an erroneous ruling. Betcha the lawyers had a say in it.
