Yet Another Passenger Footpeg Thread

I have read many threads on passenger footpegs and have seen some of the nice mods made to fit. So why another thread?
Seems like all passenger footpeg mods are being made to lower the peg and move it forward a bit. I believe there a lot of passengers who need only a mod that would put the peg forward and retain the same horizontal distance from the ground. The angle of the pegs (too far back) with relation to the knee is what causes the most pain, combined with the unusual width of the Spyder in that area, as compared with a most motorcycles. The passenger indures stress from the hip joints needing to be spread farther. With that, the knees are farther out than usual so that when the feet set on the pegs, the knees are forced to twist inward to accommodate the feet. I sat behind my wife when she started to learn to drive our Spyder, so these are my findings. I read this to her and she agrees. My wife gets off after 100 miles or so, and she has to hobble a bit to get her muscles out of the distorted mode. I would like for some of the passengers to give some input on this one (wife, girlfriend, SO, daughter, etc.)

Dudley,

I have not ridden on the back, but my girl has a bad knee and the position bothers her. I have been looking into a solution for her. My thoughts mirror yours. My concern is that by both lowering and going forward with the passenger pegs, she may lose some of the height she needs to get her leg up and over the back rest when saddling up.

I would like to see some pegs mounts that are adjustable, or maybe made so it will hold two pegs per side. One at the original position and one lower and out. Or a floorboard with different offsets. Then the passenger can mount using whatever works and switch positions during the ride.

As I said, I have not ridden back there, but the original position may be better for stability in twistys, and the lower position for highway.

I started working on an idea yesterday with a neighbor/friend/jack-of-all trades. The protype will probably be a bit rough looking, but if it seems to work, we will use it for several months and go from there. Will post and have pics when done, along with a review from my wife.

Old trick used by those of us that have topcases. These make it difficult for a passenger to mount. If you have a centerstand (or a Spyder), have the passenger mount from the rider pegs before you saddle up. The pillion rider can then slide back, and you can mount the same way. Unfortunately, this trick doesn't work well with a sidestand.

+1 My wife always gets on first using my pegs and then scooting back. Then I get on. Just the opposite of what we do on a 2 wheeler.

Dudley,

Have you taken a look at the Kuryakyn rear peg adapters using the widow pegs? I'm looking for a rear peg adapter that brings the foot forward, but not down. The widow pegs are 3 1/16" wide; so, the passenger's feet will be placed around 3" forward from the current center line. These pegs have a tilt adjustment also; at least that is the way I read it. I need something like this because I have the Cortech sport bags.

We are working on making a passenger footboard that will mount onto the current footpeg after removing the rubber piece and using the bare peg to attach the footboard. The footboard will be 7" total length so as not to interfere with the rider's legs. Will make the protype out of diamond stock from Home Depot. Not very strong, but if it works I will move to a thicker stainless steel piece that will be cut at a fabrication shop. Don't know if this will even work, but will try. Will do a pic display when it's set to try.
