• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. What's best for Cleaning the Windshield? Anyone use Pledge?

I thought Magic Man posted something about what to use to clean the Cal-Sci windshield but I'll be damned if I can find it. What do others use? Has anyone ever tried Pledge?

Is the Cal-Sci windshield different than any other, say the CHAD?

Are these windshields as easy to scratch as a helmet visor?

I want to know what people are using to clean these things too!

Cleaning your Windshield
We make our own cleaning fluid. When you buy a windshield from us, we give you a small spray bottle of cleaning fluid and a micro-fiber cleaning towel. Here's our "secret" washing fluid recipe, the result of testing about 25 different formulas:
Makes 1 quart = 1 liter windshield washing fluid
  • 1/2 cup = 100ml ammonia (double this if you have a lot of bugs)
  • 2 cups = 400ml isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
  • 1.5 tsp = 8ml car wash detergent (don't substitute dish soap or laundry detergent)
  • 2 cups = 500ml water
We recommend using only micro-fiber cleaning towels on your windshield

I have, for the past many years, used water and a bug pad/sponge. Now with the microfiber cloth, I use one to dry the windshield, then I spray a little Pledge and wipe off with another fibercloth. If I have washed the whole Spyder, I will pass the cloth used with the Pledge to give a final wipe over the whole dry Spyder. I have found that the Pledge on the windshield is good for beading rain drops and helping to keep the shield a little clearer in the rain. We have a CalSci on our Spyder.

If I have bug bodies embedded on the shield, I drape a moist towel on it overnight, Softens them up. Otherwise, I clean and polish with Plexus spray.

I made a batch of Calsci cleaner and I must say that it is the best cleaner I have used; leaves no streaks, removes bugs and road film very well. I made some for my wife for cleaning mirrors, etc. and she agrees. I make mine using 3/4 C. ammonia.

Pledge Spray and Wax:firstplace:
Cheep and really works.
Polishes, dries clear.
Dissolves bug guts and exoskeletons, protects and makes the next cleaning easier.

What was the last thing that went through the bugs mind when he hit the windshield? His keister. :roflblack:

And, if you have a disgustingly large collection of bugs... soak with hydrogen peroxide... won't hurt the plastic and eats up the bug guts.

.

After I get a heavily-bugged windscreen cleaned, I apply "Plexus", which can be obtained at most bike shops. It was originally developed for aviation use, and provides a slick coating to plastic windshields similar to Rain-X for glass. It does not scratch, and bugs can be removed easily with this stuff on. Spray it on, wipe it off.

Thanks Opticat and patches! I've been using the Calsi formula with great success, but if I can keep the bugs from sticking like they do now, it will make cleaning a whole lot easier!

:2thumbs::clap:

I just wash it with the car wash stuff I use on the Spyder and dry it with a paper towel. When I have squashed bugs on it I'll wet a dryer sheet and then wash it right off...otherwise it'll scratch and leave a residue. I found any cheap dryer sheet when wet will dissolve the bugs off the paint, windshield, etc. and it works fine. Just be sure to wet it first and then wash it off right away. I used it on the stock windshield and the touring model I have on it now.
