What are your Thoughts on a 2015 RT? Anything to look for/watch?

I have a friend that's looking for a "New To Him" Spyder Rt.

I have found one that's 300 or so miles from us so I need a little advice on this year model.

The bike looks very clean and has less than 5,000 miles on it. They had it serviced by their dealer last fall. It already has three car tires installed.

Anything in particular that I need to look at or watch out for on the 2015's

Of course he would like to get it as cheap as possible so, what would one like this be worth?

Well I have a 14 RT with 66,000 + miles on it and have been Extremely happy with it .... In 2014 BRP changed the former DESS module and it subsequently began FAILING ( like for 14.15 & 16 model Spyders ) It appears they have FINALLY fixed the issue based on what has been posted on this Forum ..... The DESS module cost approx. $ 140.00 ( for the part ) it's an easy repair .... IF you get the Frunk off and DIY it. .... after BRP warrantied mine, I moved it from behind the Frunk to under the Right head light .... I naver had an issue after that..... One of the pluses with a 15 ( or the 14, 16 & 17 ) spyders is swapping the OEM speakers with after-market ones ( way less expensive than BRP's ). I did mine and my Stereo " ROCKS " ..... good luck .... Mike :thumbup:

I've been very pleased with my 2015 and it now has over 105,000 miles on it!

I had a number of warranty repairs over those miles. But it's a very reliable machine, that I'm not afraid to depend on all the time.

I have no idea what a good price would be, though.

That Spyder is barely broken in; however, one should look specifically at the services that may not have been done, brake fluid every two years, cooling system and fuel filter every five years.

Bought my 2014 RTL last March with 9000 Kms (just over 5K miles) on it - now have 18K Kms. Good looking machine, but it's a used machine so I did my own post purchase maintenance routine regardless of what paperwork came with it and checked it over. Lots of plastic, felt right at home since I own a Gold Wing. The Baja Ron sway bar was loose, quick fix.

Did the maintenance as has been mentioned including brake pads all round. Brake pads will get hard and brittle with age - I've had the pad separate from the pad plate, rare but can happen, and it's the peace of mind aspect. Installed a belt tensioner, recommended if not installed. Do a complete oil change including the HCM/transmission filter. Ask for the servicing invoice. Have the battery checked by a battery shop - load test and battery health. These machines are power hungry and a weak battery can leave you stranded.

These are all maintenance items, and should not disuade your friend from buying the 2015.

My 2014 is very reliable.

Other than these and what you want to do personally, buy and ride, your friend will enjoy it.

Thanks everyone. Your input is appreciated greatly. :2thumbs:

As a retired mechanic/shop manager I fully understand the importance of doing a full service/inspection of the entire machine and this will be done regardless of what the service records might show.

It's good to post these things/items though as someone who doesn't know needs to hear this.

The bad part is that it's a seller's market right now. I know what this machine would have sold for pre covid and honestly it can be purchased for not much more than that now. If everything checks out as expected, we will be bringing it back with us.

Sorry. Double post. But here's a pic!

Ok I guess that I can post this now, my friend and I traveled 360 miles one way yesterday to look at the spyder. The machine was in showroom condition. The owner had it serviced last fall and with led headlights installed and a couple of other minor issues taken care of for the tune of 1,100.00 :gaah: (yes I have the bill to prove it.) The Garmen gps had never even been used and was tucked away in the trunk.

The actual mileage is 4,620 miles. We did wind up giving a little too much for it (in my opinion only) but it ran and looked brand new! 16,500.00 It also came with 2 almost new Helmets, Sena coms and a few farkels.

Yeah.

Tell him to watch out he doesn't go over his credit limit on his credit card when ordering parts and accessories, because these things are addicting AF.

LOL

Did I pay too much?

Is your friend grinning while he rides his new RT?

If so, he didn't pay too much.

Smiles are a bit hard to come by these days and your friend found a sure way to get some.

Grinning is an understatement, his wife asked him last night if he was going to sleep with it... :2thumbs:

I'd say he got a good deal, considering that it is, essentially, a new bike. Now you're going to need a Sena (if you don't already have one) to chat with him while you all ride. Enjoy.

Enjoy, the new to him Spyder, drive it like you stole it, for that price (with all that bells and whistles), you cannot go wrong...

~~~my only concern would be the age of the car tires installed. Since it’s 2015 model, it’s already 7 years old. Rubber has a way of drying out with age. Since you mentioned prior to retirement you were a mechanic, you already know this. Some reading this might not know there is a date code on all DOT tires sold in the United States. At least there should be, which can be found after where the letters DOT is printed on the sidewall. For instance, if the last set of numbers after DOT reads 2015, that would indicate the tire was manufactured during the 20th week of 2015
Not everyone agrees as to when a tire should be retired in regards to age. I’ve always felt if the tire is 5 years of age, it could very well warrant replacement. Others stretch that date out to 7, 8 even 10 years. Let your conscience be your guide. Others may have better & different ideas
