My wife found this in storage today...the helmet I was wearing in July 1980 when I was hit on my Yamaha XS 500 by a drunk driver. This was the helmet that literally saved my life! (Though with other injuries I had I was in the hospital for over six months and it took me two years to relearn how to walk). It's a Simpson and I THINK it was called a Type 36, though I could be wrong.
Anyway, I want to get it cleaned up and put on display. I've written Simpson to find out if there's a way to do that without destroying it...the foam liner inside has already disintegrated.
This incident was a turning point in my life...I was so badly hurt I was medically retired from the Navy and I've had to live with the pain and scars from it ever since.
But, because of this helmet, I'm here to thank my wife for finding it...and participate on this forum.
