We need another Tire thread

Hi All! New spyder owner-to-be. Comment/Question: first dealer visited told me car tires have softer sidewalls which have a greater “roll under” than the stock tire which thereby makes the “electronic nannies” come on sooner (computer senses change in tire dimension thereby applying brakes) especially on a curvy road. So his opinion is they fit but are not functionally as good. I’d like an opinion as all local dealers are affiliates of the same org. Thanx!

Others will chime in shortly I'm sure to tell you the dealer's salesman has it exactly backwards. The OEM tires are 2ply vs 4ply car tires.

I would say find a more knowledgeable sales person. Most sales people know little to nothing about Spyders.

It is actually just the opposite and the car tires will give you much better wear and handling.

Hey Thanks! Yes it was a RideNow dealer, and further troubling it was a service writer that told me. Perhaps to their credit they will mount any car tire I furnish. Not sure but a tire search seems to indicate no balancing is required if you match the “dot” to the valve stem? Thanks again. And maybe I can start an oil thread next?? What’s your opinion of Petron Plus (kidding)?

In my experience with dealerships of all kinds, the service writers are no better trained than salespeople. At many dealerships, their bonuses are based on service sales volume. So, they make next to nothing off a tire mounting unless they actually sell you the tire.

i made the change to car tires, much. MUCH better ride, and yes, all tires need balanced....

They stay in business because they are effective at selling product. No mystery there.

just another salesman term to justify mandatory selling of the inferior OEM tires from THEIR dealership. i'm glad I have a sensible dealership that will mount a tire that I bring in. AND sensible service labor costs.

ANYONE who says they can't mount a car tire, cause its not OEM, or insurance for reasons, its just them making up what they want to say. just find and read the millions of posts about car tires on here.

So your service writer told you that aftermarket tyres were not functionally as good as the Kendas, but they were quite happy to install a tyre that was functionally worse than the OEM? There is something seriously wrong with either that individual, or the dealership. The only plus is that there are so few dealerships that offer that service, that it may be worthwhile using them, but watch everything they do, very, very closely.

p.s. I have never balanced my aftermarket car tyres (my tyre guy said they are so close to perfect these days that as long as you align the dot they are well balanced......but bring it back if you do feel a wobble). I have had zero issues.:thumbup:

I strongly agree with the above posters …. IMHO you are being SCAMMED or worse if they really believe what you were told. Myself & Peter Aawen have Actual training in all aspects of tires so we are as close as this gets to being Experts on the subject. ….
