• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Trunk Light

Looks great and I love the battery idea. I notice it goes around the edge of the trunk facing outward and was wondering if it shines downward into the trunk well?

Yes its not facing directly downward more like a 45 degree angle but it lights it up quite well. You could even turn down the brightness and still see great. I didn't know there was a "made" one until i saw Deanna post it but they put theirs in the exact same spot. The strip i used is longer and turns down onto the sides for more light.

easy and cheap to make

12 volt plug with switch

agreed, less than 1/3$, tops, and yours has a switch button. However i like having my 12v plug free for charging stuff.

 :2thumbs:
But I've got to wonder if there's any way to tap into a 12 volt power source back there, and do away with the batteries?
You can. You have to remove the speaker box on the left side to get access to the power plug. Then you have to figure out to run a wire to a light inside the trunk without creating a water leak point. I drilled tight holes and used Liquid Tape to seal them. Here's a pic from the thread where I show how I lit up both trunks and saddlebags on my blue 2013 RT.

The downside of my trunk light is when the trunk is filled up with stuff the lights get blocked. For my 2014 RTS I ordered an LED strip similar to the one the OP shows and will install it in the lid like he did. The advantage of the magnetic switch is the light is always turned on when the trunk is open. The disadvantage of the magnetic switch is the light is always turned on when the trunk is open. I can't use the trunk power outlet to connect the battery maintainer without losing power to the trunk LEDs!

He Does

He does and it is 35 bucks. Switch is in the plug adapter and it is a double row of LED's and bright enough at night to light the whole area around the spyder in addition to the trunk!

Thanks, Dee!
I didn't know that Harvey had one; it's time to do some shopping!!!:yes::yes:

....Back when I learned Electrical Installation for house wiring, if I remember correctly 10 gauge @ 120 volts would be safe for 30 maybe 40 amps..........So if you are wiring LED's that have so little power draw,,,, 22 gauge is actually over-kill........I'm just trying to save you some money........I know they aren't giving 10 Ga. stranded wire away..........Mike

The 10 ga connectors were so it would be easy to crimp then on three 18 or 20 ga twisted together!

.....I.M.S., In my comment to you, I only talked about the ....WIRE SIZE...., no mention of the connectors.......To me it's like using BOLT cutters instead of WIRE cutters.............But I will say this you will NEVER overheat those wires :yes:.......Mike

I do believe what we have here is a failure to communicate! :banghead:

I did not use 10 ga wire, but looking at the note on the pic I can now see why you could read it that way. All the wires are 16 ga and smaller, for two reasons. That's what I had on hand mostly, plus I don't like tapping into a circuit fused at 10 amps with wire that will melt before the fuse blows if there's ever a short. When you twist 3 18 ga wires together the combined size fits in a 10 ga connector quite nicely. There are three wires in both spade connectors. I hope this lets the mud settle to the bottom and you can see clearly now!

:yes::yes:.....OK. now we're on the same page :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:.........My LED circuits are on a separate fuse block with 2 amp fuses.............Mike
