Hip Replacement?

A number of years ago I had a total left hip replacement done here in Maine. I don't know exactly what went wrong with it,the surgery that is, but it only lasted two years! I winter in Florida and the second fall & winter I was limping around and the pain in my upper thigh was terrible. I went to an orthopedic specialist in Clearwater Florida. He took X rays and found that the appliance(the part that goes down into the upper leg bone) had not been fitted correctly and was twisting & moving around. He did another total hip replacement and it has been fine ever sense! I was riding a Honda VTX 1300 at the time and I took two months off from riding. I did everything the Dr. told me to do,Exactly, & it's been fine ever since! On occasion it gets a little stiff sometimes but I put cruising pegs on the Honda and that helped a lot. I'm hoping to put cruising pegs on my RT soon because I plan to do some touring down here in Florida. For now I just take breaks when I feel the stiffness coming on. It's strange because I try to walk it off by walking during these breaks and it works. Good luck to you! Tom

I've had two total hip replacements, both of 'em, two years apart (2006, 2008). No problems with either one. They were BS (before Spyder) replacements and at the time I was a high mileage long distance bicyclist so I was very fit for both operations and religiously did the rehab exercises both before and after the surgeries. Listen to your body during rehab. Good luck!

Total knee replacement. Rode to Durango and back two months after replacement. (1800 miles total) A little stiff but doable. Not had a hip replaced but understand the knee is much worse. You should be fine.

Don't know. ..!!

But all the best and 's for a fast and full recovery ... from what I read you will be back on the road in a short time....

Had my right hip replaced in 2006 ( I think) it made riding much more comfortable. If you have a choice and you almost always do, get an anterior vs a posterior replacement surgery. The healing time is much quicker, smaller incision and they don't cut through your buttock muscle.

Welcome to the club. Had mine replaced (right hip: anterior method) on Jan 4th. Was in a wheel chair for going on three years, so my recovery is slower than most. Am now up and about with a cane. Put the wheelchair and walker away a week ago. Got on the :spyder2: two days ago. Did not need any leg assist throwing it over from standing on the back pegs. Was able to slide into the drivers position seat and it felt comfortable (no pain) when moving the affected (right leg) around. Got off the :ani29: from the front footboards. Prognosis: Don't think my :spyder: driving will be affected. Just waiting for March or so when the snow melts off the roads by my place. Wishing you a fast recovery.

I want to thank you all for your replies yes I'm having anterior robotic surgery

Dave, I had the exact same surgery on 12/2/16 and was riding my Spyder 2 weeks later. I waited the recommended 6 weeks before riding my Valkyrie only beause my Dr asked that I wait. Strangely enough, the arthritis pain in my knees that would begin after just an hour in the saddle, doesn't appear even after an all day ride. Good luck with your surgery and work hard during rehab, it makes all the difference.

Thanks that's awesome news
I had to stop riding my Fatboylo because I couldn't get my foot back on the floor board after a stop .
But never gave up the F3s can't wait Wednesday then start the rehab so I can ride .

And BTW, best of luck to you. As I said in an earlier post, mine is being done on 2/15. So we will be on about the same healing curve. Want to trade notes on how you/I are doing post surgery?

I had my replacement done 3 years ago (total hip done at an early age....55 years old when it was done). When I did my pre-surgery interview with the doctor, I told him that I owned a spyder and I was curious about when I could ride. He told me that when I was allowed to drive, I could ride the spyder.

I have had zero issues with the hip replacement and the spyder. Just follow the doctors recommendations, DO NOT VIOLATE hip precautions that the doctor, nurses and rehab staff will instruct you about, make sure you do all of the rehab exercises and you will be back on the spyder in no time....

Had a right anterior hip replacement a year ago and just went in for the one year check up - no problems. The only restrictions I was given was 1. No Yoga (No problem!) and 2. No running - unless the house was on fire or someone was chasing me......

The important thing is FOLLOW THE SURGEON'S INSTRUCTIONS! R-E-P-E-A-T..... FOLLOW THE SURGEON'S INSTRUCTIONS!
Was also given the clearance to horseback ride but.....that's going by the wayside for an F3. Movin' on!

I only have one regret - I didn't have the surgery done sooner. HIP REPLACEMENT GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK. :dg1:

Good luck to you!

I'm a little curious. Are you saying that after 1 year you still have hip precautions? I know when working with patients with anterior hip replacements there is no forced hip extension allowed; but, that precaution is usually lifted after about 6 to 8 weeks. In any case, glad you are doing well.

I had a one month follow up on Mon the 6th. They are going to see me in one month and then one year. No restrictions on me whatsoever. If it hurts, don't do it. So far, nothing hurts.

I don't plan on doing any marathons for awhile. Am driving and getting around with a cane for now. I can walk mostly upright (before I was bent over at almost a 90 degree angle).

Heart issues prevented me from doing the surgery earlier.

Left Hip Replaced - Spyders are Good!

I had my left hip replaced several years ago. That was one of the many reasons that I sold my Honda Shadow Aero 750 and got a Spyder ST Limited.

Piece of cake. No issues of any kind.

Dave 7691, I have had both of my hips replaced and I have no issues ryding my Spyder. 1st one was in 2006 and second in 2014, no issues at all!! Be aware that there exists limits as to how far you can bend your new hip, my Doc knew I would test the limits so he told me to listen to my hip, it will tell me when I am pushing too far, so that is what I do.
Bottom line, listen to what your Doc tells you and follow through with therapy post surgery, it is going to get you back in the swing of things better and you want the hip area to be strong!!
4 weeks and you should be up to ryding!!! Good luck!!!!:thumbup:
