There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Torx tool suggestions wanted

I plan on getting the following torx tool for "on the road/away from home" usage.
attachment.php

But I would like to get suggestions for a set to be used at home for future work on my Spyder.:spyder2:

I found a set of 1/4" and 3/8" Torx head sockets. Most of what I use are the 1/4" drives, so I keep a driver around that's kind of like a screwdriver sort of tool, (That they snap onto!). It have a hole in the end of the handle where you can plug in a 1/4" ratchet drive also.

I bought a nine piece set of Torx bits, T10 to T50 from Harbor Freight. Five are 1/4" drive and four are 3/8" drive. They have the Spyder covered.

A T-20 and T-27 bit will cover 99% of the Spyder bolts. I use an extended 3" long T-27 in my 1/4 inch Milwaukee impact tool and can easily remove and install almost all of them.

I hate to question you; but, I have to. I have a 2008GS, and I have used the T30 the most. In fact all panels use the T30, at least on my 2008. I hope I didn't put my foot in my mouth.

The Harbor Freight bits are OK but they do wear and strip over time. But they are so cheap just get 2 sets.
I have already worn out a couple common bit sizes.

:agree::agree::agree:............... PLUS YOU CAN GET THE T-30 IN PAIRS OR SINGLES AT HOME DEPOT OR LOWE'S PRETTY CHEAP.......Mike

I did not want to start a fight over quality vs price of Harbor Freight tools

I know that the quality of the Harbor Freight tools is questionable so I am looking for a GOOD set that will last me a long time
and not strip out and possible strip out the screws.

Take a look at this one. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-10-in-1-Torx-Key-Screwdriver-Set-48-22-2103/204221757. Only $7.98.

You can get it at other places as well as at HD. It has 10 bits and can be carried in the Spyder very easily. The bits are quick change so you can use them in a driver at home, and long enough to reach almost every torx screw on the :spyder2:.

There are a couple of places, like the ends of the front tupperware, and some screws under the seat, where I use a short torx bit turned with a 1/4" box wrench because the space is too tight for a handle or power driver.

.....The bits I've purchased at Home Depot were hardened steel ( like drill bit metal ), I think " Milwaukee ", not expensive.....Mike

As you may know (or maybe not) I have been doing my own service and many other farkles and what not for over 2 years.
Had my Spyder apart so many times I cannot even count!

I have never stripped a torx head screw on the Spyder but again I have stripped a Harbor Freight torx bit due to amount of use.
They just wore out!
No big deal.

Anyway with that said, if your going to wrench a lot, spend the money. If not I am a proponent of the cheaper Harbor Freight bits. They have done OK for me.
If I was a full time mechanic... I would go for something better.

I buy lot's of low end stuff from Harbor Freight--but the quality of the torx tool bits are terrible.. Spend a few extra $ dollars &buy a better brand---Home Depot torx bit mnfg's from brand name companies are worth the extra few dollars. Or you strip the torx screw or bit on the 4th+ use if the torx is tight.. What's your cost in time & vehicle use to make another trip to the hardware store???

Might just be my preference but I wish the torx pattern was never invented. I've never had a problem with quality Allen wrench's in either metric or SAE.

Not at all. Technically the bolts on the spyder are mostly T-30 but many are not formed exactly to specs. Too tight for a high quality T-30 to fit easily in every one of them. T-27 is an odd ball size but what I found was that a high quality T-27 extended bit fit ALL of the spyder fastners well and without stripping or damaging. (all except the T-20s used for small plastic fasteners.) The F3 has some T-25s and hex socket as well.

Once you try some Milwaukee bits you will not go back. THe fasteners will thank you as well. There is a big difference in the materials.
