Tornado in Amsterdam, NY!!!

I could not believe it! I was at work today to try and get ready for my knee surgery on Wednesday and the RN Supervisor and I were on the phone when the wind got really strong... A few minutes later she called my office and told me we were under a tornado warning. We moved into our High Winds plan and I ran up the back stairs to help out on the floors. I was in the lobby closing the curtains and the power went out, I figured it was not a good sign.

We got all the curtains closed and moved all the residents away from the windows and so it was just getting through whatever came next. Then as quickly as it started, it stopped!

I left about an hour and a half after Warning was over and on my way home, it was very obvious that a tornado did touch down and that its path was probably about a mile from my nursing home on rte 5, and after it touched down there, it touched down even closer to my nursing home or there could even have been a 2nd one because a man on Robb Road said it touched down in his back yard and thats the next left off the road my nursing home is on about a 2-3 minute walk from the facility!!!:yikes: Just a bit too close for comfort for this Director of Nursing and from one who lives up here to stay away from tornados and such! I keep thinking if the curtains were open, we probably could have seen it from the top floor!

Well, we are all very thankful that our residents are safe and that the staff are safe and prayers go out to anyone who was directly in its path.
I wish I had not left work tonight, because I cant get back at this point. The road out was clear, but in, it is not.. not even the back roads way we all took when the roads flooded with Irene. Too many trees down. :(

The power of the storm was amazing... The church I attend was almost directly in its path. As I drove by, it looked like almost all the trees in the cemetary behind it are down.. Big 2 and 3 foot diameter trees cleanly snapped off about 2 feet from the ground. I noticed that the Church had a bit of roof damage and the parsonage looked affected, but I couldnt look too much I didnt need to be a factor in all that mess. I cant say the back of the church was ok, nor could I be sure that any of the surrounding houses were ok.

I still cant believe the distruction I saw. I thought the flooding of Irene was a horrific sight, now to add this. My prayers go out to anyone affected.

Yeah, now night staff cant get in, I cant get back, the incident commander of the disaster is talking about having the red cross bring us in supplies!!! :yikes::yikes:

Wish my spyder did off road (over trees... through the woods...)

I am staying steady, telling staff to hold on, roads will be cleared. The generator is on and the place is ok. The residents and they are all safe and ok, and we have plans to get throught stuff like this. We got through Irene, we can get through this. I'll leave soon to try to get back... again.

Well, I cant get in... reports of live wires down now. All staff made it in prior, but one nurse who may yet make it she was on her way last we heard and before we were told about live wires down, but either way, its covered, the evening nurse is taking care of it. :2thumbs:

I am so impressed with the staff! :clap:The facility is in good hands and all are safe and cared for with barely a hiccup. We have some top notch people there!!! Another crisis handled and so far so good!

As for the area, there are no reports of serious injuries at this time, only structural damage. Still .

My  go out to you and your residents and staff. Have a dear friend that is a DoN like you and I'm a retired volunteer firefighter that has dealt with tornados in the midwest. Hope all works out well. Good luck!

Thanks I appreciate it. Its times like these that I really know how much they all, staff and res alike, mean to me. I wouldnt want to loose any of them!
They even took care of my mom who was in visiting my dad who lives there. Mom lives across the street and her flashlight wasnt working, so they gave her one to use when she went home. I could hug them all!

Glad everyone is all right. Tornadoes are very scarry and destructive. Glad I no longer live where they occur.'s go with you.

Wow that is some crazy video. Hope things are too bad up there in NY. Hopefully my house didnt get any damage in endicott.....

:yikes: We don't normally see stuff like that up here... I hope that the damage was relatively minor and everybody is okay...

I thought I lived where they didnt occur... well at least not often anyway. In the last 10 years or less, I have been near 2. I just got home from work and it could have been so much worse. We are very lucky.

I'm glad you are ok Lisa. This video below was shot not even two miles from my house of the actual tornado. Hang on !!! We lost power all night. We are ok. People down south will say that this isn't nothing, but up here it's something.

Yeah I saw that video, it was wild. As a kid, I saw water spouts on Lake Michigan, then I moved here in 4th grade and have never been near a tornado, until the last 10 years. First Irene (last Sunday) and now this (on Sunday), my staff said watch out for next Sunday... Vulcano???

It seems that Cranesville got the brunt of it, I have heard of 1 house and 1 barn loss due to 100 year old trees snapping and falling on them, but nothing official. Seems rumors are running wild. I heard that the Italian resturant over there collapsed, but when I went by just now, it was still standing. Had roof damage, missing shingles, but was still standing. Who knows though maybe part of the roof fell in. Will have to wait for the offical reports to come out. I'll have to read the paper or watch the news... thats something that as of late, I dont like to do.:(
