The Young want the Spyder......

Many articles suggest that only the "older" population desire the reverse trike, and that the spyder does not appeal to the young. Based on my experience (although limited), the numbers can be a bit misleading. Most of the young guys I see and talk to do desire to have it, but the reason they can't get it is because it's out of their price capabilities. Which makes sense....let's face it....the average 21-30 year old has not acquired enough wealth that justifies spending 20K on a toy when they are at the start up phase of families. Based on what I've seen, if the spyder were a 10K machine, there would be ALOT of "young" people owning one.

BY NO MEANS am I complaining about the cost of the spyder. I think the spyder has a fair price point. I'm just stating that at this level of a toy, a young person with a young family has to pick the "family" purchases as priority.

I can't speak about the demographics, but the logic is solid. I've seen the same with sports cars.

You are basing the cost on "NEW", I can't even remember the last major " NEW " purchase I made...I just bought a "used" 2011 RSS SE-5 for $ 12,500 and frankly I think I stole it ??????.....In the past 2 weeks 2 -08 GS's with low mileage sold here for $8,000 each with some very nice mods on them. If people don't know how to shop it can't be helped. !!!!!!!.....Mike

It's not a young person's ride, it's a young-at-heart person's ride.

Talk to any teen / college age male, and if they had $10k to drop on a toy, chances are they'll buy a crotch rocket or sports car.

as a younger rider I can say cost is a issue, its looks and majorly it's performance. I tell people what it does and the scoff at it, which for the cost rightfully so (in a rocket type bike comparison of course) The other end complain of the looks compared to a bitching hog that is big and slow and has terrible everything that just goes bar to bar and is a extension of their ego, less sleeves.

I would love to be able to say for 6k more than a liter bike you can have a more well rounded vehicle that will still do 150 but gets good gas mileage if you are nice to it but right now I can not and people I ride with or talk to that are younger want that.

My basis is that if it was 10K new they could find used ones for 4-5K. That would get a lot of the young on the spyders. Sure many would buy crotch rockets if they had the money, but many would buy the spyder too. Not every young person desires the crotch rocket......I know from experience.

My son liked my 09 RS so much he scored one for himself back in 2010, left over 09 for $14,000. He was 24 at the time working double shifts as a security guard. If there is desire the way will be found. He's now 26 still riding and loving it.

This price point is key in many areas of motorcycling right now. With the days of razor sharp 600cc race bikes at sub 9999 coming to an end you have seen more and more companies release budget minded bikes at a more affordable price point as the 600cc bikes climbe in price and just now for 2013 Kawasaki released a 600 with traction control... Yup adds like a grand to the price. Tech and improvements drive the price up.
Also affordability has played a key point in why flagship superbikes like the 1198 and such haven't suffered as much as the 600 market. If you can afford the big boy toys you will be more likely to get them but when you can't afford anything you are more likely to get a loan and get a sweet bike. (cough side note tightening loan requirements have strangled young buyers from buying)
But its true when people say the spyder costs a lot I point to a bike with TC or a Goldwing and you see we're priced in the game depending on what your looking at.

I agree with what kratos originally said. In our area we also have just a different demographic of people. I know a large number of people that have made the choice to invest 12,000 to 18,000 in a razor or commander because the main thing they are looking for is a means to be able to get drunk on the weekend. They go out to one of our local ATV campgrounds with a cooler full of beer on the back and spend the whole day getting hammered. I'm not bashing this as I have a campsite and a 4 wheeler and tend to have a cold one from time to time, but I tried to make a decision initially between a spyder, jeep, or a Honda big red and came to the rational conclusion that something i could drive on the road everyday made a lot more sense. Like I said, not bashing it, but I know in my area the ability to consume alcohol plays a major role in where people this age invest their money.

In Las Vegas you can rent rims and based on the number of rim rental shops I would guess that a lot of people do. So now whenever I see an older vehicle with fancy rims I can't help but wonder if they are rented or not.

It's not so much price, But think back when you were between 18 and 20 some thing, Would you want a Spyder, Or would you radder have a Mustang/Camaro, Or a Sport Bike. If you had a Spyder how many Friends would have Spyders to ride down to the Levee with you, :dontknow:
