Summer Trip

Well,

I am already planning my summer / fall 2010 vacation and would like to share my initial plan and get suggestions and ideas.

This year, I thought about riding around lake superior over a week's time. Here is a map I found.

http://www.lakesuperiorcircletour.info/docs/Lake_Superior_Circle_Tour_Route_Map.pdf

I have not set a date for departure at this time or a specific schedule.

I would like to hear from those who have done a similar trip around lake superior: things to see, places to stay, tourist traps, etc.

If some of you are interested in joining me, then the more the merrier, right?

Thanks much.

That's an ambitious trip, about 1,500 miles, not counting getting to your starting point. Sounds like fun, during warm enough weather...and after blackfly season. I have always wanted to do some circle tours of the various Great Lakes. If you have not done a Google search for "Great Lakes circle tour" or "Great Lakes motorcycle circle tour" as yet, do so. There are many points of interest pointed out, and some reviews of people's actual rides. Motorcycling Across Michigan by William Murphy has a Lake Superior circle tour, and gives recommended motorcycling roads, turn by turn, and also relates points of interest and a few pitfalls. Beside the possibility of cold, wet weather, be prepared for a lack of gas stations...a possible problem on a Spyder. Be up to date on maintenance, too. Few motorcycle shops and little road service up that way. A Lake Michigan circle tour is about the same distance (unless you take the car ferry) and offers another fine alternative, as does the 950 mile Lake Huron tour. Have fun!

It is an ambitious trip, but I think it could be great. I am just starting my research, so I'll definitely do a lot of google searches.

I'm surprised you mention the lack of gas station since the map seems to show a new town every 50 miles or so.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

A fabulous trip. Great roads, especially in Canada! Be sure to visit Rainbow Falls - at the top of the lake. Good hike, awesome view. We've done it more than once. Great sites to visit, too! Then there's the ride across the big bridge at The Sioux.

I haven't made the trip, and have spent very little time anywhere north of the Soo, but William Murphy's book mentions the scarcity of gas stations.

I have done the Lake Superior circle tour several times. I loved it, especially the part in Canada. Not that it matters, but I was born in Superior, Wisconsin (moved when I was one).

Our Associate Pastor at our church has Brian and me involved in a Lake Michigan Iron Butt this summer. There are going to be 5 of of from our church that do this together. I don't have any dates yet, but I know he sure is excited, he has it all mapped out and everything. I may have to invest in the book Scotty is talking about and give it to him as a gift. Have a great trip!

I have been hashing around the idea of an around the Mitten ride. Working up the maps little by little. Not sure it would work (or be long enough) for an Iron Butt. The best views and places to visit are near the shores, but those are by far the slowest roads.

Man, that sounds like a great trip. In August of 1992 I worked for about a week in Two Harbors, Mn. Got there on Saturday and had Sunday to drive up the north shore, into Canada, and back to Two Harbors. Even in a cage it was probably the most beautiful trip I have ever taken. My wife and I still talk about how pretty the country was. I envy y'all.
