Spyderpops Block Off Plate Results

I got tired of wearing my insulated 1/2 chaps so I bought a Spyderpops Block Off plate. It arrived and I noticed it was black. They are all black, I guess. Since I have a Viper Red 2012 RT, of course I wanted it to be Viper Red!

I purchased a can of BRP Viper Red spray paint from a non-OEM on-line vendor. When it arrived, was I happy or what!!!

I sanded the gloss off the block off plate with 400 grit, and primed it with plastic primer. After waiting overnight, I sanded it again with 600 grit, and applied a first coat of Viper Red. Waited again overnight, sanded it with 1000 and a second coat of Viper Red. Did this again, making 3 coats of Viper Red.

Did I mention that MY Spyder is Viper Red?

Once again I waited overnight, followed by a 1000 grit sanding, but this time I used a 2k spray top coat. Waited four hours, sanded and a second top coat.

Now my block off plate is the right color: Viper Red!

So I installed on my Viper Red Spyder, following the instructions exactly.. .this took all of maybe 15 minutes--including reading the instructions repeatedly. They are easy to follow, but I am not mechanically minded, so I have to be extra careful.

Finally it is installed and it looks beautiful--not like an add-on at all! Gotta go for a test ride. Now this was not a Ryde, it was a test ride. I headed out onto a back road, around to the freeway, through town, back to another back road and through town again. All total about 75 miles.

Results: My right foot did not get hot when I used the highway pegs. I noticed a very little warmth in town when my foot was on the brake at a red light. But it was very comfortable. The Spyder is the real winner here though. It normally reaches the 1/2 way mark on the analog heat gauge within a mile or so of starting out and then stays at this level. Today it reached the 1/2 Mark at about 10 miles, and I was at a red light. It cooled down to the 1/4 Mark on the freeway, and then up again to the 1/2 Mark going through town. The spyder seems to be running significantly cooler, but I did not measure before and after with a thermometer...so, I can only say "seems to be."

By the way, the thermometer on the dashboard was reporting 77 degrees today. I know that is not the ambient air temp, but that is what the Spyder thinks it was.

So, the block off plate installation and test was a huge success!

Same results here..

Had mine installed at the recent Spyderfest - color matched my Black bike just fine. I have the upper block off plate (a lower one is also offered). No more hot breath from the dreaded Dragon's Mouth. Good product and it works. I have floor boards - the lower block off plate was installed on my brothers bike and my daughters bike - waiting for their input. Neither of their bikes have floor boards. All 3 are RT's - 2010 - 2012. One is White - the other is Lava Bronze - the plate looks good on both of them.

Good stuff..!!

spyderpops has a great line of products. I have used all the heat related products with great results. Glad it worked out for you as well. Congrats on a great job with the paint and installation....:2thumbs:

Has anyone figured out how to use the Spyderpops block off on a 2013 and get the heat to exit down? At one point I thought Spyderpops or someone was working on a replacement for the deflector behind the radiator to allow this.

Inquiring minds need to know. (especially this one)

Please report to us when the temperature gauge is 104.

Chris
it wasn't 104, but the dash read 102 today on the freeway, so I think it was over 100. On the freeway the needle was beneath the mid-point on the analog gauge. It used to run smack dab in the middle. In town it was smack dab in the middle. So, it is running a little cooler with the spyderpops and the floorboard removed.

Dan, my gauge on my cage said 102 also in San Jacinto (same area you were in) at about 315 PM.

I'm concerned about costs so I think I will wrap my lower right leg in foil and of course recycle afterwards. A homemade gator. I used to be a welder (retired) and did aluminum welding and used cutrodes. Sparks were my business and I have the battle scars to prove it. I used to wear aluminum sided leggings or gators because cuffs on trousers and boot tops were fair game. But on a Spyder, you only need one. Sometimes I feel the heat but mostly get used to it. Comes in handy, er, footy in the winter. Btw Dan, I don't trust analog gauges. I disconnected mine and use the display board instead. More accurate.

I did this: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?65387-Hot-feet-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!&highlight=chaps
It solved the problem, but I wanted something a little cooler for me this summer. The Spyderpops block off plate seems to have done that on my 2012 RT-S

More hot weather results: 102 today, driving in city traffic. Stop and go. Red light to red light. I was hot. The Spyder was not hot. It ran at the normal mid-point on the analog gauge. I am really happy with this accessory.

The block off plate works great BUT I am concerned about the contained heat destroying the vacuum lines and rubber throttle body mount prematurely. My lines were cooked, 2011 RT with only 12,000 miles. Check out the photo I took of the throttle body mount.

HARVEY

What Harvey did when he installed mine at his shop was drill the cowling underneath with several door knob size holes to vent the air back and out. But that might just send more heat into the engine compartment...i've had 2 water pumps in underwarranty and the last time they put the splash pan back on, when I'd taken it off. they didn't ask me about it just ordered it and put it on. I took it back off and am thinking about possibly drilling it as well. this was in response to my gas smell complaint and they replaced teh canister as well. Gas smell seemed teh same after i got it back, so I went in and added a long extension of the line between teh tank and the canister, looped over the air cleaner to give the vapors that might condense into fuel room to vent back into the tank. That seems to have helped more than anything so far, and i dare say i'm getting better mileage per tank, although i'm not keeping ongoing mileage/gallon logs to see if it actually is improving...i am noticing i can sometimes go 120 miles before my fuel light comes on, where as used to be around 100 miles.

2013 RT blockoff install

Has anyone figured out how to use the Spyderpops block off on a 2013 and get the heat to exit down? At one point I thought Spyderpops or someone was working on a replacement for the deflector behind the radiator to allow this.

In response to the question from “jcthorne” Spyderpops has supplemental instructions for the 2013 RT on their web site. I need to install mine and I was having problems getting the lower panel off. I talked to Harvey @ Spyderpops and he told me what to do to remove the panel. He also recommended drilling the holes as depicted in their instructions and also on the inner panel. I haven’t installed mine yet because I have to lie on the garage floor to do the work and it takes a lot of work to get back up. Hope this helps.

Door knob holes not needed?

I installed the plate the other day on my 2013 rts. I did a test ride before cutting the door knob holes and I notice no temperature difference on the dash gauge. This is in 98 degree florida heat. I am very satisfied.
