Since it has been several months since we first developed and started selling our Spyder Rack and SL has grown so much I thought it would be a good time to post about it again. First of all, let me say that I am a Spyder owner. I use my products extensively before we ever consider them for you guys. The Spyder Rack I have on my bike has about 10,000 miles on it and does as well as when I first put it on. This unit is the 3rd generation development and we removed the first two from consideration due to the placement of the load. A square or rectangular base (which many have) places too much weight too far behind the bike. This causes control issues when turning and makes the bike very hard to handle.

[TD]Ever get frustrated by not being able to carry more stuff on your rydes? And the only way to carry the extra is to drag a trailer. Which is OK, but let's be honest, you don't have the acceleration or can take the twistys like you would without it. So the wife and I started looking at hitch carriers. The choices were pretty limited and I didn't like the mounting characteristics or where they were positioned on the hitch. They were too far back, which would have caused balance issues, especially if you like the twistys like we do.So I decided to fabricate a new style rack; one that moved the load forward so that you would hardly know it was there. We worked through several styles until we found the perfect one. We call it "Positive Forward Placement". We were even able to get a water resistant bag that mounts to it that we like to call a Spyder Pack. Next came the mounting. I ask many of you what you would like to see in a Rack and overwhelmingly you wanted an attachment method that would allow you to keep the hitch ball in place. So we gave you two methods of attachment. You can use the hitch ball hole and 2 specially designed U bolts, or leave the hitch ball in place and use 4 U bolts to secure it. The Spyder Rack comes with all mounting hardware and is easy to do. You will need to position a plate and secure it to divert the exhaust, and we also include that kit! We have even included not only paper instructions, but a install DVD that shows the different ways of mounting!

Long winded with not pictures...?? :hun: a few action photos would help. Side view, loaded, with /without the custom bag...you got a great product and a picture is worth a thousand words...glad its working out...:2thumbs::clap:

This is an example of the first design and the second design. The first design worked well, but it positioned the load too far back making the bike harder to control and very easy to oversteer even with just the 40 lb. capacity that the BRP hitches require. The second design was developed with a shorter width, and an open area to move everything slightly forward. This second design was still not quite right and there were attachment issues.

This final design is what we finally was able to develop. It allows for multiple applications, does a better job of forward positive placement, and is actually lighter than the second design.

This design allows for either a 2 U bolts and a hitch ball attachment bolt if you wish to remove your hitch ball and attach that way or using 4 U bolts it can be mounted without removing the ball.

Further developments will include rear lighting with a license plate holder. We are also developing an add-on suspension adaptor that will bolt between the Spyder Rack and the hitch so that coolers can be taken and contents don't get shaken open. More stuff to come....

i got doc's rack, used it for my first spyder vacation this past 4th of july, extremely happy with it. my wife & i were able to bring all that
we wanted including our 2 kites (revolution 4 line & a conyne). eventually i will get a trailer but until then this rack does it's job & for me
i am very happy with it. i also had lamonster highway pegs to make the ride more comfortable.

We use a Spyder bag that is waterproof. It fits the pattern of the Rack. Prior to that in wet weather we carried and a heavy duty trash bag and used it.

After riding GL1800 based trikes for six years, I knew that I had to find a non-trailer means to increase storage on my RTL. Before I "found" DOC's Spyder Rack, I had the Spyderpops Trailer Hitch Plate installed. It was thick enough that there was no problem to drill it for the U-bolts. As "dumb luck" would have it, I think the mud and debris issue off the rear tire has been solved. We'll be giving a real good test over a 5 day trip next month.
One modification that DOC fabricated for me was a " quick release" mechanism for our Spyder Rak. This way the SR is bolted in place without using the trailer hitch. It allows me to remove the rack for service, and/or storage.
