There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Spyder In Reverse

I have a 2012 RS SM5 and it seems when I put the bike in reverse and start to back up the bike wants to die. Seems to happen when the clutch is almost all the way out? Normal? More RPM's needed? Normally around 2100+

You don't have the parking brake on, do you?

If I'm on a flat surface, the 1500 idle allows me to back up without giving it the gas. I have a 2008 GS, SM5.

Wylie,
Is there an rpm limiter in play when you're in reverse? Or is it an mph limiter? :dontknow:

I have no clue. Why would there be one in reverse? Is there actually one for the forward gears?

I believe I started to float the valves a few weeks back when I shifted from first to second at 9500 rpms. I sort of lost track of the rpm's for a split second. That's why I question the rev limiter.

That's about where it is on your bike; that might have been what felt like "valve-float"
I hit mine at a touch over 9000 rpm once... just once!
I wonder about a limiter, since I would think that BRP wouldn't feel comfortable about unldeashing all of us with full power available when backing-up.
The potential for sad tales, and long faces, is just too... large!

As stated i would check to see if the park brake needs adjusting my sm5 will idle back in reverse no problem.

Seems to me that the dvd about the spyder that the dealer had me watch for the test drive said something about a limit in reverse but I want to say it was a limit of about 12 miles per hour in reverse for safety reasons.

There is a lower rev limit in reverse...I think it is about 4K, but I don't remember for sure. The nanny also acts differently in reverse. The traction control will kill the engine if the wheel slips, not just cut back the engine like it does going forward.

Scotty beat me to it. Also, backing up an incline will kill the engine if the rpm is not where it should be.

There is a rpm limiter in reverse, And some polaris atv's [mine] have a buy pass button for reverse, and if you're in reverse hard on the throttle and hit that button you'll find out fast why a limiter is needed, Reverse gears are much lower than even first gear.:yikes:

I had early problems learning to manage the clutch on my 2011 RT SM5. I stalled it a few times. The clutch has a real small engagement range. The handle has a long pull but only the last 1/4 of movement involves the clutch actuation. In other words it is TOUCHY! Just took getting use to it for me.

Well..!!

like those above, I normally idle in reverse with the exception of inclines. If you release the clutch to quickly it will stall out. You can adjust where the clutch engages with the setting wheel on the clutch lever. Have not encountered the rev limiter so can't help there...good luck..!!
