Talk about a great weekend. The SLO (San Luis Obispo, CA.) Ride was fantastic. For me it started, meeting everyone at one of our sponsor dealerships “Jet World” in Castaic. Dan, the owner was very gracious in opening up his shop for us to use as a meeting point.
Once we all got together, it was time to hit the road. Fortunately, I forgot the map and directions to San Luis Obispo. No one else had the directions, nor did anyone have their GPS set up for the ride. Off we go, with me in the lead, not knowing how to get too, where we were going. That’s ok, I knew where the starting point was (I was standing there). I had a general Idea of where the ending point was. The hard part was meeting DIGGITTT on time, in the correct location.
We went north on interstate 5, exited the freeway at Frazier Mountain Park RD. We stayed on that road. It turned into Forest Route 9N05/Mil Potrero Hwy. Who would have known that? There weren’t any street signs that I saw. This turned out to be a fantastic road. Slow sweeping turns, with some twisties mixed in. It was a beautiful clear, warm day, the views, were fantastic.
Some how we made it to New Cuyama on time, met up with Diggitt. In New Cuyama we had lunch at a place called the Burger Barn. I think this is the only resteraunt in town. The burgers were great. Ken and I each had the Big Budhha Burger. The Big Budhha is not just a hamburger it is made with five (count them 5) hamburger patties. This thing weighs about 1.5 pounds. It’s huge, and boy did it taste good. After pigging out for a little bit. We got back on the road. We were now heading west on highway 166 (finally a road with street signs). When we arrived at the town of "Santa Maria". I relinquished my role as lead, and had Kathy take over, I was now running sweep. Kathy had a GPS with the address of the motel we were all staying.
Kathy did a great job leading. She only made one mistake. When we got off the freeway, her GPS was telling her to turn right to go to the motel. Well, she turned left. I laughed so hard, not because she went the wrong way, not because her GPS was telling her to turn the other way. I was laughing because I did the same thing when I was leading. The only difference is, I don’t use a GPS. It just goes to show you. No matter how high tech we get as humans, we still make mistakes. After the “U” turn, we made it to the motel safe, and sound.
What a great day, and a great ride.
More to come, hopefully tomorrow
