Sena 20S observations after 2 weeks

Hey folks, so lots of talk about Bluetooth lately so I thought I would provide some information about my experience so far.

So you know I have had Sena SMH5-FM units for almost 2 years now. Two weeks ago I upgraded to the dual pack 20S. Thanks Motorcycle Dave for getting them for me! Dave is the man!

So first just to be 100% open and honest. When I got the set I did have one base unit that had a problem with the MIC connection. I got it to work by wedging a tooth pick in the bracket but felt for the price I should not need to do that. Contacted Dave and he got me a replacement set right away and RMA to return the other set. Again Dave is the man and I recommend to buy from him especially because he is a sponsor here and customer service is top notch!

OK so I really had no desire to upgrade from my SMH5-FM units. I was pretty happy with these. But when I read some of the features of the 20S units, me being a techno nerd, I had to have it. In the end the new features made it worth it and I do use them. So for me, the cost was worth it for a few features below specifically audio quality, multiple volumes, and multi-audio/sharing.

So first of was audio quality:
My SMH5 units did have the larger ear speakers like the SMH10. Prior SMH5 and other less expensive units had smaller speakers. So I was pretty happy there. However the 20S ear speakers are far superior! Both my Wife and I could immediately tell the difference. They are louder, have more bass, etc.

Features that impressed me:

Volume levels per paired device..... THIS is an ear saver and one of the best features!!!
On my SMH5 if I forgot to turn my phone down and had my headset volume set for a good level with say the music, or with a comm session with the wife, when I would switch to the phone it would BLAST my ears out. I constantly had to remember to turn my phone volume down to about mid-level. If I didn’t and hit the phone button to ask SIRI to make a call, the DING and SIRI's voice was way too high.
Now with the 20S you adjust the volume levels separately for Comms, Music, Phone, etc.... It then remembers these volume levels.

Helmet to helmet communication WITHOUT interrupting anything!
This is sweet honestly and worth the price of admission. With the SMH5 sets when my wife and I would enter into a communication, music and everything else is turned off. If your GPS or phone does something you would get a beep in the headset and to take the call or listen to something else, you had to end the communications.
Not anymore. Now my wife and I can keep an 100% open communication (she likes to talk a lot ;) ) and hear the music or whatever in the background. The volume of the background music is also adjustable! AND it is adjustable per headset!

Sharing is pretty neat! Prior to this feature if my wife and I wanted to hear the same music it had to come from the Spyder's radio with the BT dongle (Sena SM10). While we still have that for many other reasons, if you don't have that setup now you can play music from your phone and share it to another headset! In fact you can share it to multiple headsets! So if you don't have the SM10 you now can listen to the same music.
Now you might say.... aaaa big deal. Well the other thing sharing does is you can both be on the same phone call! If I get a call and turn on sharing, we now have a conference call. We both liked this feature for sure.

Common MIC to other devices while in a helmet to helmet comm session.
So this may not be important to some but I liked it. I have a GoPro with the Sena MIC backpack. This allows me to shoot video and pick up my voice from my helmet's MIC. Now before on the SMH5 if I entered into a comm session with the wife, it cut off the MIC to the camera. Thus no one could be heard if the camera is still recording.
Not anymore! Now while the camera is recording if I open a comm session with the wife the camera picks up BOTH of us talking.... This was not in the manual I just discovered it by accident... So a hidden feature :)

The Sena APP for Smart Phones. THIS IS A GOD SEND! Remembering button sequences to turn on and off features or even how to pair was impossible to remember. Now with the APP you can change all your settings right from your phone. Yes the 20S can also do that via buttons and knobs but read the manual on doing it that way. Most would never figure it out or even begin to remember it. The APP makes all this easy. Oh and forgot how to pair a device? The APP has help and a quick setup instructions built right in.

Ambient mode. So in the past if I parked and someone wanted to talk to me, I would have to pull of my helmet to hear them well. Now you can press a button and turn on ambient mode. The 20S has another MIC in the case that allows you to hear outside of the helmet. Believe it or not this works well even if you have music playing. No need to turn off your music first but depending on how loud you have your music, you may still need to.

There are a couple other features I have not really needed yet and probably won’t.
Shaking the unit to pair with another helmet. This is an option instead of having to remember what button to push.
Taping on the case instead of a button to enable "voice commands". While very cool I have not used or really needed voice commands.

Anyway, I thought I would share my experiences with the new 20S system. I am very happy I upgraded!

Oh and just to close, I will be selling my dual pack SMH5-FM headsets at a really good price so stay tuned for an ad in the for sale section when I get the time to take PICs etc.

Thanks Bob for the great review!

When you have had them for a while can you report back on real world battery life?

One problem we had with our Sena SMH-10R headsets was battery life. But the external battery lent itself to adding a second battery to each unit and they now run well over 16 hrs in full time intercom mode. More than we need but 8 hrs was not enough.

The features are indeed items that would be useful for us.

Another nice feature is the built in FM radio.
So if the wife don't like whats on the Spyder Radio they can listen to their own station.
Nice review!

Can't give you a MAX, but after a little over 8 hours of listening to the Spyder FM, iPod and GPS thru the SM10 and the occasional talking to the wife the "low battery" had not been announced.
It appears that internal FM is what really eats up the battery.

Great review Bob, I will be putting that on my list of reviewed and approved upgrades. My tire came in today so hopefully this weekend I will get that mounted up.

I got a Q3 multiset Scala Rider yesterday. It is what was recomended to me by the guy at Louis Powersports parts dept. He has a Sena there as well but told me the scala rider was better. The Q3 is more of their middle of the road in their line up though. I discovered it had 2 different size speakers in the set last night. Today I found out why. That set only came with one set of speakers. They ordered the other pair and what was sent to them was the larger ones. I found this particular set on Amazon for 100.00 off last night. When I told them, They matched the price. I had an older set for half helmets and have always liked them but now Im using 3/4 helmets and needed a new set. I tried to make the older ones work by krazy glueing them on but that didnt work out. Its a nice setup so far. well see how it works with the cell phone and the Zumo GPS connected. The range is not as far though. Only 1 K. Anyway If I get farther than that I can call her on the phone.:ohyea:

PS I didnt mention it but my Wife just got a new Harley Heritage Softail classic so thats why we needed the set.

I can report a little on the battery life JC.
My commute to work is about 1 hour each way. After 2 days of riding into work on the 3rd day my SMH5's would shut down.
My wife and I went on a all day ride around the area. After about 5-6 hours the SMH5's would shut down.

I am now on day 3 with the 20S and still OK. I get middle charge indication when I turn them on. I am actually NOT going to charge it and commute next week as well to see how far I can go.
Remember these have the latest BT spec which has much lower power consumption. But we shall see if that is true. So far it's far better than my SMH5's.

Also another note to add to my review. On my SMH5's when I turn it on it took quite a while before I got the voice that said "phone connected". Sometimes I wondered if there was a problem as it seemed to take a long time. With the 20S, I turn it on and it says "welcome" almost INSTANTLY it then says "Phone connected".
So one thing for sure, the BT 4.x spec on these is super fast on connecting to devices.

Bob,

Great review, I want to also add the S20 has Universal intercom pairing so you can pair it with other Brands like Scala. The S20 is my first Bluetooth headset, my wife and I was able to play our own individual music via our phones, leave the intercom open to talk and the batteries were still good after a 10 hour day of riding.

Well just to add, Sena via software updates over time made their other headsets like the SMH10, SMH5, etc pair with non-Sena headsets. They basically implemented the full BT Spec. So this is not a feature of the 20S only.

But glad your enjoying your 20S units! :2thumbs:

Thanks Bob

Thanks Bob for the great review of the 20S SENA units....
They are by far the best sets out there... It's nice when you buy
something and it does what it says it does, and easy to operate
Ride Safe everyone

Your welcome Dave and thanks for the EXCELLENT customer service for my one problem unit.

I will have no second thoughts about doing business with you again!

We have had the S20 comms since August of last year and I have logged a few thousand miles with them and here is my review.
Since the patch that came out in November the volume of the set has been much improved. The battery life is excellent, even with all the talking my wife and I do when we ride. I like some of the voice commands, but sometimes "sena" asks me to say a command if the wind hits the mic just right. Last season my wife had a problem with her comm cutting out for no reason. This season she has had no issues, but now I am experiencing the same issue. I have marked my headset with black tape and know that it is my unit because the speed dial numbers are the ones for me, and not my wife.

This is my first set of comms, so I have no benchmark. This is just a listing of my experiences. Overall, I like them, but I am waiting for the next patch to see if there is a fix for this transient issues.

Just sayin'...........
