• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

SE5 weight?

Is there a significant weight difference between the SM5 and SE5 transmissions?

Also, what are the maintenance differences?

Not much

As far as I know, there isn't that much weight difference between the two.As far as maintenance goes, the SE5 adds another oil filter, the changing of adds just a bit to the complexity of maintenance and has been covered here exhaustively by Lamont and others. So now,why do you ask?

The transmissions are actually the same. The SE adds an electronic shifter, a centrifugal clutch mechanism, and extra filter & cover, and a few ounces more oil. Only a few pounds difference, at most...and the SE doesn't have the added weight of the clutch, so it all probably comes close to being even. This isn't like an automatic vs. manual transmission in a car.

Just for general knowledge. I am torn between the two. I love a manual, but this semi-auto seems to be pretty popular. If it shifts quickly, I would strongly consider it, but any 'auto stick' I've driven in a car is a far cry from a manual.

The SEs shift very fast and nothing like the slop you get from an "auto sticK". There have been discussions on both sides and the SEs seem to always win out in sheer numbers. I personally still prefer the SM, but I drive automatics all day, so it's nice to actually shift something for a change. So far as resale goes, I'm getting the impression SEs hold their value better, because more people can ride them, but you will pay extra up front and for maintenance. The computer also changes on the SE models and there's greater complexity with the machine and in some cases more break downs, but that seems to have for the most part been resolved with BRP updates.

If it's a toss up, you'll likely get a way better deal on an SM this time of the year, but it seems Spyders are give-away machines at the moment, so good deals seem to be everywhere.

Having a SE5 RS and a Manual RT I can only say the SE5 will out shift and out accelerate the Manual in my experience !
It shifts as FAST as you can hit the blipper and you leave the throttle Pegged All the way!!
But I love the Experience of the Manual !!

Sarge SE shift

when your into the throttle and start banging gears, does it bark the tire leaving :spyder2: POOH on the pavement? :yikes:

RE: SE5 vs SM5. I have had the pleasure of owning both flavors of transmissions on :ani29:,s. Coming from two wheels, it was not problem to get the SM5 on my first :ani29:--also no choice--the SE5 was not yet available.

Having said that, I also got one of the first SE5's when they became available. My last two :spyder2:'s have both been SE5's. I dont miss the clutch or the manual shifting and find the performance to be no different.

Maintainence: I am not a mechanic so have the dealer service my vehicles.

It all kind of boils down to a choice of what you like best. Cost is less for the manual. You don't need to mess with the finicky parking brake with the SM5--I just left mine in gear when parked.

The SE is not an automatic transmission or an auto shift. It is merely and electric shift. Those electrons and the shift solenoid can move much faster than your hand and foot. The SE shifts are faster. Choose whichever you like better. I'd suggest you test ride both, and go from there.
