• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

SE5 transmission

drifter

New member
Hi I’m new to motorcycles and shifting I have always had an automatic car or truck. I ordered an SE5 transmission and have a couple questions.
1. Does the SE5 downshift automatically?
2. At what rpm should I up shift? I know I have to stay out of the red but I mean what is optimal for the spyder.
Thanks!

Shifting SE5

1. Yes - downshifts somewhere around 1800 - Will downshift down to
1st automatically when coming to a stop. You can downshift manually
if you like.... but no need to

2.- Upshift - My dealer said around 3200-3500 is fine. Works for me.

Upshifts so fast that you don't even let off the gas.

1. It will automatically shift from 5th to 2nd at 2400rpms for each downshift. Then from 2nd to 1st at 1400 rpms.

2. I would not recomend upshifting under 3500 unless you want some jerking as it will drop you to almost the downshift rpms. I generally shift mine now at 4500 and have increased my MPG by 2 since i upped the shifting from 3500-3800 to 4500+

I now have 1300 miles on the SE5 and still loving it.

The SE5 transmission does as everyone says below, however, some have reported that in hard braking, the downshifting does not return to 1st. I have experienced this firsthand. On one occurence, when braking hard to avoid collison with a car ahead, I found myself at a stop showing 2nd gear. After about 5-10 seconds it automatically corrected itself and went to 1st. On another occurence, I was braking hard and found myself stuck in 5th gear. I tried to manually downshift, no avail, then tried to upshift (I don't know why!), still no adjustment, then I released the brake, and moved the vehicle a few feet and it adjusted to 1st.

These were more panic than worry that it was failing. I noticed that on some occaisions, when braking, I have allowed my throttle to be slightly held "on". This has contributed to the downshifting being confused. So now, when I am in a controlled situation, approaching a stop, I take my grip off of the throttle. This assures that I don't get caught trying to keep the rpm's up that was confusing the downshifting.

Many people on motorcycles, would never let the right hand relax, because the brake lever is there, but being new to riding, I can find this technique normal to assure that the SE5 will automatically downshift properly.
