• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

when you down shift the se5 auto trans does the engine hold back the bike a brake like with the sm5 clutch trans :sour:

not familiar with the SE but nothing like a manual...don't even like automatic cars. Had to drive one due to a back problem but am back to manual everything (mechanical)....:roflblack:
 
You will get engine braking, but only down to the point that the transmission downshifts again on its own...in other words, you get the most effective engine braking if you downshift the SE manually.
 
I have taken to riding in trailer mode so the downshifts occur at higher rpms and it prevents shifting and downshifting at speeds the clutch is not fully engaged at. I like it much better than normal mode the down shifts occur more like I would if manually shifting. The thing I notice is there is a delay after downshifting before engine braking starts 2 or 3 sec otherwise much more like a SM5. I did it to save brakes and have consistent up shift and down shift points. It also seems to have increased MPGs 1-2 MPG too. I also believe it will extend the brake life due to more engine braking that is my actual goal is to make those last as long as possible. I use them much less now just coming to a stop with light pressure.

I was gonna do the same thing but was concerned about possible damages to other mechanical components. I hope one of the guys on the board who really knows about such things will comment on my concerns.

:hun: I have read others do it too. What are you worried about? It is no different than normal except it won't get (or let you) below clutch stall before downshifting. The only issue I have is I can't put cruise on at 25mph in second It won't let you shift into 2nd until ~28mph so I can't use cruise in school zones in 2nd. Are you implying I don't really know about such things? I have read enough threads of people who do it and it won't hurt a thing and will save the clutch from slipping. If it works with a trailer it is good enough for my lead butt.

I feel the Braking effect MORE on my RT Manual than I do on my GS Automatic?:yikes:

The SE is not an "automatic" transmission. The transmission is the same as the SM -- a manual transmission with a conventional motorcycle-type multiplate wet clutch. The difference is that BRP designed an automatic clutch control system and shifting system to shift the manual transmission. They also added a centrifugal clutch mechanism to keep the clutch disengaged at idle when not moving. Conventional thinking and experience with "automatic" transmissions does not apply. If you downshift the SE or downshift the SM, you are doing the same thing and with the same results.

Differences in engine braking between two bikes can be the result of many things -- the engine characteristics, the exact rpm when downshifting, etc. But in the case of Spyders, it's not from an "automatic" transmission versus a "manual" transmission.
