Spyders are getting out there in all sorts of roles. There are even a few of the PD versions of F3's & RT's undergoing evaluation with some of our Police & some other Govt Departments here Down Under!! So it seems clear that there's a fair bit of interest in them!
I understand (from talking with some of the trainers/evaluators involved) that instead of taking 3plus Months to properly train a new Police Motorcyclist on a 2 Wheeled machine before releasing them to Operational Duties, the training on these Reverse Trike 3 Wheelers can take a Police Officer off General Duties & have them trained & operational in a little less than one third the time!! AND the Accident & Injury during Training & on Duty stats are waaaayyyy lower too!!
As for the 'greater access & manoeuvrability' etc that we normally attribute to 2 Wheeled motorcycles, all the Officers I've spoken to have commented on how extremely surprised they were at how little is actually lost or compromised on the Spyders - sure, they are wider, but they are also more stable under a wider range of road conditions, surfaces, turns & braking, speeds, etc than most expected; so much so that they've found that most of what they lose in the 'squeezing thru the gaps' ability is more than compensated for by the extra stability & better manoeuvrability that comes with the reverse trike configuration - altho they also ALL commented that Sport Mode was very effective on the F3's & therefore a highly desirable feature on the RT's as well!!
All that said, none of the bugga's have let me test any of the Police Spyders out yet!! Not even on the tracks & obstacles at their training facilities, where they unhesitantly let me ride their 2 Wheelers just about any time, but apparently they are solidly booked & booking well in advance just to give all their active 'interested personnel' some saddle time - so retirees & ex-trainers just don't stand a chance of getting astride one of them, not yet anyway!!
