RTL Mirror squeaking

My new to me 2013 Spyder RT Limited has a squeaking right mirror at low speeds. IF I put the Spyder in Cruise I can silence the squeak by holding down on the mirror. I've unmounted and remounted the mirror and it still squeaks. The mirror retaining clips have a bit of surface corrosion where they clip over the pins.

Should I Q-tip a bit of grease or something on the retaining clips where they clip over the pins. They still seem to hold very well.

Those pins look pretty straight...
I'd hesitate to put anything too slippery on them: you don't want them to let loose on you, out on the road!:yikes:
Try cleaning a bit of the corrosion off of them, and see if that helps.

SQUEAKING

I have an RT also and really find it hard to believe the squeak you hear is coming from the mirror clip....... I think the mirror might not be completely secured onto all the fastening points, ( it is a very common issue with the RT mirrors ) and this is what you hear.... I would be hesitant about putting any type of lube on them because they are known to come LOOSE after hitting a bump.....( ask TAXMIZER ) Maybe spit on it , because at least that would dry ................ good luck ...... Mike

Rather than putting anything on the wires, even tho they do look pretty straight, it might just be worth getting a pair of needle nosed pliers & gently squeezing those wires together just a tad. That way they will grip the pins a bit firmer & rapidly wear away any corrosion, and with any luck, in a day or two the squeaking will go away!

And if it doesn't help, you haven't really lost anything except a bit of time & effort that might have solved your problem!!

The top clip only has two screws. I discovered if you take the top screw and move it to the other hole, it makes the mirror fit tighter. I did this to eliminate vibration. Be careful, it is a little harder to put on, because of the reduced flexibility. BUT it can be done..

You might consider cleaning the springs with some crocus cloth to remove any oxidation and then, as some have recommended with stubborn mirrors, putting a very thin film of white lithium greas on the heads of the two shperical head studs that hold the mirror in place. Put the grease ONLY on the heads, not on the tapered portion of the stud shafts.

Many Thanks all for the great ideas

Thanks for all the good ideas!
I'll start working through these tonight, going on a cruise tomorrow and Sunday.

There you go....

You should get it fixed up in no time.... I have a spider living in mine..every morning I have cobwebs all around, wipe them away and the next morning they are back...must be inside there somewhere.....:roflblack:

WD 40

I use a light spritz of WD40. No squeek, no problems. We have had Ann's mirrors off lots of times, and they have never fallen off. Might be a fluke - she only has 93,000 miles on this one. They don't squeek.

one of our members, took a very small amount of tape and put it around the mounting pins, he said it stopped the shaking of the mirrors

Put some grease on the "Hanger" (the top pin) as well as the other two, this has fixed mine.

Clarification/Followup #1

So, Just to make sure I was referencing the correct problem (Squeaking Right Mirror) I removed the mirror completely and took a ride on my closest road where I found the squeaking to be really annoying, No Mirror, No Squeak.

Back home, spit on the mirror mount pins and clips, mounted the mirror properly insuring all three points were securely clipped in, and repeated the ride, SAME SQUEAK.

Back Home, removed the mirror, buffed/sanded the mirror retaining clip wires with some 3M WetorDry 2000 (I'm from Minnesota, of course it's a 3M product I use) that I had in my workbench (didn't have any crocus cloth unfortunately). Carefully remounted the mirror again, (getting easier each time I do it) insured that it was really secure, out to my test road again, SAME SQUEAK.

Son' and Daughter's in Law, Granddaughters and Grandsons came over for family dinner, smore's in the backyard around a fire pit, gotta be Grandpa before fixing a persistent squeak. Will work on remaining suggestions as I'm working from easiest / least expensive to most expensive / hardest fix.

My next test will be with moving one of the screws holding the top clip and test ride again to see if that's changed the squeak. If not then I'll try adjusting the existing retaining clip wires with needle nose tweaking, then the lubed posts, before I move on to Taxmyzr's suggestions to replace the '13 pins and pucks with '14 pins and pucks. More to follow for anyone interested.

I gotta admit after a full tank ride today with my wife, visiting In-Laws up in White Bear Lake, cruising back roads up, Interstate back that if a squeaky mirror is my "biggest" issue, I'm leading a pretty BLESSED Spyder life!

SQUEAKU MIRROR

Sorry the spit didn't work :opps: :banghead: ..... but I felt if you lubed it up and it fell off ( $250.00+ ) that would be worse ..... I think the last paragraph is your best option ....... I mean how LOUD is this Squeak ????? .............Best of luck ..... Mike

Mike, I do understand and agree with starting with the simplest suggestions first and work my way up until I solve it.
How loud is it? I'm only wearing a half-helmet, with the cold weather ear flaps, listing to my IPod at about 50% volume
and can hear the squeak above the engine and stereo at speeds under 45 or so. My wife rode double with me today
and she can hear it chilling back behind me. (And we're both in our late 50's, worked on USAF Flightlines for 10+ years
out of our 20 year USAF careers, so I KNOW we both have some hearing loss, and the squeak is driving me crazy..)

I acknowledge that the squeak is a really minor concern, EVERY thing else has just been flawlessly perfect, we really do
feel like we have a brand new machine, and we've had several many friends in disbelief that it is a 10,000 mile used bike.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions and will keep working through the list with a report on what finally works. (The darned left
mirror is quiet as a church mouse of course).

One other thing to look at would be "rubbed" places on any of the plastic where the mirror pieces mate with the fairing. It could be plastic-to-plastic making the squeaks.

Followup / Probable solution (for me)

I had even considered the mirror to body rubbing possibility, and have visually inspected for any signs of rubbing, But trying to work solutions from the easiest /least expensive I decided to just switch the two lower retaining clip pucks. Darned if that didn't fix the squeak, just back from a 100 miles around the lakes cruise with 4 other MN Spyders and never heard the squeak.

Thanks to all who replied with suggestions.
