RT-S Speakers

Hey Gang,

Anyone changed out those "premium" speakers on the RT-S yet? I've had my Spyder for a week now and ready to chuck the stock units as they sound horrible. Tinny and can't handle any bass...YUCK! :yikes: Any thought or recommendations? :chat:

I am looking at Polk Audio units but have not tore into unit yet. Does anyone know their sizes...I guess either 3 1/2" or 4"?

Thanks in advance. :helpsmilie:

would have to be waterproof.

wonder if they are the same size as anyone else (gold wing or Harley speakers). then be easy to find upgrade

The Polk's I am looking at are a true "Two-Way" Certified Marine grade speaker so they should be fine. I used them on my 2001 Valkyrie Interstate and they really provide an upgraded sound experience as the "paper/whizzer cone" stockers are junk! :dontknow:

cool what is the model number and where you buying from?

replacing front and back?

Easy enough to replace, but its the elements that you have to consider.
Rain and high heat.

Marine speakers maybe?

I've already added tweeters to the front. When it comes down to it, bass does not travel well at fast highway speeds. BUT higher end sounds DO. So hence my addition of tweeters.

I like it. Did you replace the stock amp aswell? :ani29:

They are from Crutchfield.com and are the db351 & db401, $59.99 & $79.99 respectively. I need to know what size are the stockers as I haven't torn into unit as only a week old...anyone know? My guess is 3 1/2"!

I am of no help to you right now.. But this is on my to-do list this winter. I plan to put a high-end set of Marine Mids up front, and a high end set of Woofers in place of the rear speakers (Most high-end woofers are polypropylene)... Then place a pair of tweeters up under the dash.

I used to own an installation company, and car audio was one of our lines of business. I found that the quality of the speakers are as critical as is the RMS/Signal to Noise Ratio is in the amps... I do not need surround sound on my bike.. but I do want to hear the artist intent of their music. Not this oversize set of headphone speakers our RT's have (Just my opinion)...

For now I have turned off the stock system and am using my headsets... :2thumbs:

Pop off the front speaker grille- they snap right off with NO TOOLS , you can then measure them , they are NOT 3 1/2" .

I'm thinking the front's were 5.5"

That's an excellent choice! I just went out and verified the fronts as 5.25" and the rears are 4.0 (I think as they are positioned inward and hard to measure). The back grills are a bear to get open and back in...lots of sweat pouring from my face! :f_spider:

I went back into the rear pods again and the rear speakers may be a 5.0" unit. Very hard to tell. I ordered the shop manual for this very purpose. I guess not many of us have changed out the speakers as not much chatter here on this issue.:dontknow:

Went to the dealer and they weren't sure of the rear sizes either. I then checked into the 2010 RT-S Spyder's Owners and Service Manuals and nothing is listed on the sizes. The Service Manual lists how to remove speakers and how to wire, but alas no specific information concerning sizes. I am surprised  that no one here has upgraded the stockers for some newer and better sounding units...that was always a given with the Valkyrie Riders Club I am associated with.

I guess I need to call the BRP Corporate folk on Monday to see if I can get the information...:hun:

Let us know what you find out.:chat: I think the machine is so new no one has had time becouse its summer ride time. When you did your last bike with the new speakers did you change out the amp as well? Also welcome :ani29:

Thanks for the welcome. :2thumbs:

Regarding the amps, on the Valkyrie I never had to change anything but the speakers as the Head Unit had enough "umph" to power it all. I think the same should be true on the Spyder's HU as it has power but no clarity in the detail and image of the sound. I know that sounds silly with an "open air" machine, but if I am spending $27k on my rod, I want one that sounds good! :D
