I'm asking this because I don't have a shop manual (plus I'm at work... on my break, honest!
)
Recall that I was having trouble with my RS SE5 not wanting to downshift or go into reverse:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?32867-RS-SE5-won-t-shift
That day I had that problem a number of times, but since then I hadn't had any issues shifting; problem just went away on its own.
This weekend, however, I started noticing it again. Sunday morning it was so bad I couldn't even get out of the driveway-- the Spyder just would not shift into reverse no matter how many times I tried it (and shut off the bike more than once to try again).
Then, for some I-don't-know-why reason, I chose to give the cable that connects to the bottom of the clutch housing (the one closest to the reverse selector) a little wiggle, kind of pushing into the clutch housing. A nudge, really. Tried reverse again, and voila, went into reverse with no problem, and then I rode 165 shifting-trouble-free miles yesterday (stupidly, in hindsight, seeing as how I could have easily been stranded again).
Now I think it's obvious-- the cable's loose at the housing. BUT, I just had the dealer *replace* the housing with a new one-- AND they found me plenty of cable slack for my risers.
I'm just about at 3,000 miles so I was planning on taking it in to get serviced anyway, and can ask them to look at it then. but here's my worry: they didn't fix the LAST housing, they just replaced it completely, at considerable expense. I'd like to avoid them doing that a second time, seeing as I can expect them to say, "It worked when we gave it to you, the cable slack is obviously not enough, you did this to yourself, and because you installed the risers we STILL won't cover it under warranty."
Personally, I think there's plenty of slack (*now*)-- I'm thinking something wasn't installed correctly, or something just came loose, that I was able to fix just with the little wiggle.
Pardon the long intro :shocked:, but BOTTOM LINE: how does that cable connect to the clutch housing? I looked at it briefly yesterday, and unlike the throttle cables on the right handlebar, the cables on the left are all covered all the way to the housing and clipped off, so it doesn't look like there's an easy screw or nut to tighten there. I also don't know what's *underneath* that cable cover, would I even be *doing* anything there, or is it more than likely I have an actual short?
Thanks for any help...
