Ride-On question

My right front tire is showing wear on the inside and my local cycle shop said they'd swap the tires on the rims for me. I purchased my ride-on last month as I was thinking about just getting new tires. My left tire looks practically new, and not having a lot of funds I thought I'd just switch the tires for now. My question is - If I have them put the ride-on in on my old tires, would/should i have them take the weights off as well?

Or should I just wait and have the ride-on put in new tires later this year?:dontknow:

My RTS is doing the same thing. I'm going to have mine realigned. With only the right front tire showing excessive wear on the inside, is an indication of too much toe out. If this is the case, Ride-On will not help with the tire wear. It is only for balance and not alignment.

Unfortunately for me, if I want to get an alignment done, I'd have to ryde 140 miles round trip to one service dept. that told me earlier that You can't DO alignments for Spyders. (red flag for me) the other - 170 miles round trip- said they could do it - I'm going to have them do it when I purchase new tires- but I have a feeling they won't find any alignment problem. I say this because I know Spyderwolf took his Spyder there and his inside wear was much worse than mine. He purchased new tires and asked them to do an alignment and when he got it back thay stated that his alignment was fine.

I know ride-on won't correct an alignment problem- What I am wondering is if it is a waste of $ to put it in used tires and should I keep the weights on or have them pulled off? My thought is to pull them but am not certain if that's the right thing to do with used tires.

Just MHO. The wheel wts. will be wrong if the tires are swapped. Even if you trade sides with the same wts. the position will probably have to be adjusted and the balance point will have definitely changed for the tire with the wear. If you are short on funds, I think the cheapest route is to swap the tires, have them rebalanced at the shop using wheel wts. They may be able to reuse your existing wts. saving you a little (not much) and save the Ride ON for the new tires you purchase down the line. I don't think the balance charge is much compared to the mounting. The only negative that I see about waiting to put the Ride On in the new tires is that you won't have any go flat protection. That might be important if you are planning any trips away from home. If you are just doing local rydes, not such a big deal. It really stinks that a shop can't do a front end alignment or recognize that one is needed when the proof is staring them in the face. Part of the price we pay for getting a vehicle with a car front end serviced at a motorcycle shop. Of course I could be really full of stuff with this advice because I believe that these tires are directional. If they are can, can they be swapped and maintain the proper directionality? I honestly don't know. More knowledgeable minds may chime in here. Good Luck; whatever you decide.

While they are there, better have them check carefully for any play in your steering and suspension components. Pay particular attention to the wheel bearings, tie-rod ends, ball joints, and coil-over shock bushings...especially on the right side where you are having problems. There should be no play in any of these components! A toe-in problem can manifest itself on just one side, especially if there is a steering alignment issue, but wear on both sides is more common.

Tom,

Every Spyder with any mileage I've looked at has wear on the inside of both fronts. Mine started showing that same wear this year as I crossed 10k miles.

That you are seeing it on one side, I'd get it checked out. If it were on both tires, I wouldn't worry much. Even one guy - was it ATA or Don switched to car tires, and proclaimed it solved the problem when in reality, they found even the car tires cupping on the insides after many miles.

Have them check the alignment and suspension components and rotate the fronts rim to rim. The Ride On is purely up to you and how many miles you plan on getting out of your existing fronts.

Thanks everyone for your input!
I went ahead and had the tires switched and Ride-on installed. The tech said it seemed good except that my tire pressure on that tire was way low.:opps:
I have to admit I hadn't checked since early Jan. I used to check every other fill up. I'll have to get into that habit again!

It took me a while to get back home because I was just having too much fun ryding. the trip back felt smoother than ever:clap:.

I was just a tad embarrassed about the tire pressure.....

That could do it. Good catch by the dealer.

happens to all of us...you know those pre-ride routines...whoops! Drats!

As far as the ride-on goes, I left the weights on...this is a 50/50 and George at Ride-on recommended I leave mine on unless I had a serious issue...so, I left mine on...no apparent issues....I think it also depends on how much you put in.

With Ride-on, more is not better...I'm at 12 and 16...works great. I know many went with a lot more and that might create more balance issues with the weights...

Sorry I'm late to the party. :D

I would have waited on the Ride-On until you got the new tires, but then again if you are ryding to Maggie Valley it might be a good thing that you already used it.

So far I seem to be getting even wear on my new front tires with the Ride-On in them. I honestly believe my first right front was out of round, as that wheel took 13 weights to balance it, even when I switched to the powder coated rims.

Of course, I left most of what tread I had left on the right front on The Dragon during SitS, and that didn't help matters much either. :opps:
