Recalls

Questions

Does anyone have a list of recalls I should know about? I would like to know because we just got a dealer in Moncton NB, Canada, and I have yet to take mine into them. I bought mine elsewhere...so I lost my original dealer 5000km away.

To the best of my knowledge, there is only one actual recall...for the brake sytem on the earliest Premier Edition Spyders. The rest are all in the form of service bulletins. They are only addressed if your Spyder shows symptoms and falls within the specified VIN# and model range.

There are only 2 service bullitins i'm aware of one is for the parking brake on all models the other is for the shifting problems on the SE5 models.

Would someone please publish the VIN range for the SE5 shifting service bulletin?

Are all the Spyder recalls & service bulletins posted in one place online?

Thanks.

Both of the ones i mentioned were for all 2008 and early 2009 unfortanately i don't have the VIN range and only way i know to get them is contact a Dealer and ask.

:agree: One of the problems is that people (Including Dealers/Service departments) use the words "Recall" and "Service Bulletin" interchangably, which they are not.

I believe NancysToy is correct based on my recent, repeated experience with my current dealership. Here is my overall understanding of the details.

There is just 1 Recall - Brake Reservoir Cap Seal/Breather, Applies to earliest Spyder production runs only (Vin# spread). Since the SE5 was not in production I do not believe this recall applies to the SE5.

There are 2 kinds of Service Bulletins. 1 is covered by Warranty, the other is not and the owner will have to pay for parts & service. Non-Warranty Service Bulletins are considered non-essential, owner optional.

Both Recalls and Warranty Service Bulletins apply within a specified VIN# range. This is because Spyders with VIN#'s after this range already have the upgraded fix from the factory. I do not know what this VIN# range is and I suspect it may vary depending on the Service Bulletin.

Warranty Service Bulletin - Power Steering. Applies to any Spyder having PS issues within the specified Vin# spread. It involves replacing the Gear Position Sensor. It seems that this is the most likely reason for PS problems so BRP wants this part replaced first.

Warranty Service Bulletin - Parking Brake. Applies to any Spyder having PB hanging (hard to release) issues within the specified Vin# spread. This is a simple part swap, new and improved for old and possibly problematic. It seems that if you're going to have this problem it will show up right away (as mine did). If yours works then it probably will not give you any trouble.

Non-Warranty Service Bulletin - Squeaky brakes. Since the stock brakes are not functionally defective, BRP looks at it as a customer preference/option and will not pay for parts or labor. I hear that some dealers are making the swap at no charge to the customer. If they do this the dealer is eating the cost to make the customer happy. They will get no reimbursement from BRP.

Stopping performance is reduced with the new, sqeak reduction brake pads. I've never had a problem with squeaky brakes. Supposedly, the harder you ride the less chance your brakes will squeak. I'm going to stay with my stock set.

I have an SM5 so I am familiar only with Recalls/Service Bulletins for this model. I do not think there is an SE5 specific recall but I believe there are Service Bulletins that are SE5 specific.

My parking brake was working great...had the "fix" done, now works like crap. Had the SE5 tans. "fix" done, that's a dream fix. Like a new trans. Shifts smoother, more responsively, all the better. Will get my pads changed next week. Mine squeak or growl like a dump truck with bad brakes. Only started when the parking brake "fix" was done. Strange. Dealer says new pads under warranty...no cost.

My parking brake is almost unusable. I can set it but it's a crap shoot (that I usually lose) trying to get it to release. Sometimes it gets so tight after pushing it down just a little bit more each time that I wonder if I'm going to stretch the cable.

It is not encouraging that you're having problems with the PB fix.

I'm wondering if your PB is adjusted too tight keeping your rear brake from disengaging completely.

I would like to get the straight scoop on this squeaky brake service bulletin. My dealer says BRP will not pay anything for this. But at least some dealers are doing it and calling it warranty. So which is it?

I don't intend to get the brake pad swap but why the different answers depending on who you ask? It should be the same across the board.

And I think if the dealer is eating the cost they would want to let the customer know how they are bending over backwards to make them happy. Since I have not heard anyone who's dealer did this fix on "Warranty" say anything about eating the cost I'm wondering if my dealer is....ahhh, wrong?

In that case I'm passing out bad info based on bad info from my dealer. But I should be able to trust my dealer to give me the straight scoop.

According to Marc R. Lacroix-BRP Rep, ( met him at the superbowl Owners meet) and he stated: in reference to the squeaky brakes, " If the customer complains, the dealer should contact BRP and the Pad will be shipped to the dealer for installation. BRP will forgo the cost of the PADS and Dealer forgo's the install labor."

Given time, I hope this all gets ironed out. We have a good rider helping us out in San Diego. Keeps us all informed at this end. We all appreciate Ken M.

The recall was initially issued for the first 476 units for air in the brakes. This was later ammended to replace the brake reservoir caps. This is the only recall, initially dated 12/12/2007 and revised 1/11/2008.

I think there is a third, just called a Service Bulletin. These cover general issues, such as BUDS revisions, tools, revised parts, and revised procedures.

As far as I could learn there are two squeaky brake fixes. On 7/17/2008 BRP authorized dealers to address the squeaky brakes by applying CRC (Disk Brake Quiet) non-aerosol products to the rear of the brake pads and reinstalling them under warranty. This was to be reimbursed to the dealers at the rate for brake pad replacement, which I think has led to some confusion among dealers.

On 12/18/2008 BRP issued a standard Service Bulletin #2009-4 which stated that a new brake pad was available. This also authorized warranty replacement for Spyders S/N A29N 000001-000124 and A19K 000177-000268. I, too, suspect any dealer replacing pads for free, outside this S/N range, will not be reinbursed, and will have to eat the cost. I also agree that the older, harder pads are superior. We will keep ours, too. Periodic cleaning, and occasional hard application gets rid of the (squealing) noise fairly readily. All disk brakes will squeak slightly from time to time, however.

I know that a savvy dealer can make things become warranty repairs by how they present the case to the manufacturer. Car dealerships have been doing it for years. :sour:

parking brake release

I have had the parking brake not releasing problem as some of you have had.

I fixed it (on someone else's suggestion) by spraying WD 40 on the mechanism. I mean really spray it until it drips. It fixed it and when the problem recurred months later I did the seem thing with similar results.

Prior to doing this I had tried so hard so often to get it to release that I had to adjust the brake cable back by the rear wheel. Jumping up and down on the parking brake lever had stretched the cable.

When it is working correctly a simple toe touch will release it.

Never had the noisy brake problem so I have been lucky there.
