Question about manual shift VS electric shift

Does the manual shift RT have floor boards or pegs? How does the reverse work with the foot shift? I have the electric now and I kinda hate it for cruising at low speeds through town between lights and such. If you have a manual do you still have to set the parking brake every time or can you just leave it in gear? I'm going to a 14 model and I am going to have that option offered to me again, manual or electric so i'm weighing options.

manual

has pegs and an electric parking brake only. I always set the electric park brake because sometimes I will start bike and let it idle -- but you can just leave it in gear when you shut down -- it wont start unless the clutch lever is used if its in gear.

I think the 14's have floorboards. With the SM, you do not have to set the brake and you can leave it in gear. I like being able to ride in town and use what ever gear I feel like.

Many swear by the SE and it is really all about what you are comfortable with.

The shift pattern for the manual is "R-1-N-2-3-4-5".

So to engage reverse, once in first gear, you press down on the shifter while holding down the reverse button on the left handlebar.

manual all the way..!!

I'm a manual ryder and all my other vehicles as well. Prefer to be in control, be able to pull in the clutch and coast the down hills, manually control the park brake and leave the roadster in gear. It's a choice and you will have to weigh the pros and cons. The other benefit is not many requests to ryde it from newbies anyway. We are a dying bunch what with air shifters, paddle shifters and automatics dominating. But I can still walk and chew gum at the same time...:roflblack:

I am a manual shifter also and I don't think they 2014 has floorboards. I almost never use the parking brake unless I want to get off and leave it running.

If you decide to go with the SM be prepared to wait. They won't be building any until the end of January. :gaah:

I will have to wait a month longer to get the manual but it will also be $1600 less money. I'm leaning towards the manual cause I cant ride in Feb. anyway.

While leaving your vehicle in gear (with a motor off) works (especially on the hill), I'd still recommend using your parking brake every time. It's just a good habit to have, and I do not recommend getting rid of it. You never know what may happen while you are not there. Additional safety feature never hurts anyone.

Neither the 2013 or 2014 SM offer OEM floorboards. Seal Floorboards will fit your new ride. You would want to order the RT SM5 DLX. It comes with a slightly taller shift lever to accommodate the floorboards. I also offer a heal and toe shifter for a bit extra.

Ride in comfort,
John

I bought the SM5 and I am happy with it.

On my '2011, the Neutral is a bit tricky to find. I bought the SM5 because first and foremost I am a control freak, but it was also cheaper and has less automation & controls that could go wrong. When I bought mine, there were a lot of posts about shifting issues on the SE5. The frequency of these posts has reduced dramatically, so it seems things got fixed with more recent model years. It seems that many malfunctions were also self-inflicted by the owners, who were shifting at low RPMs and preventing the centrifugal clutch to fully engage.

Since the centrifugal clutch is gone for 2014, these issues will disappear on the new SE6... but you are also enrolling as a guinea pig to debug their new gadgets... (Like in 2010 and 2013)

The 2015 owners will thank you...

Yep found that out... dealer said Dec. or Jan. on SE6 (in yellow) and late Jan. or Feb. on SM6. First ones out will be the Cognac/silver/black in SE6 versions. Yellow color will be next and the white will be last, so they tell me.

Sounds like they have your questions covered.

Have owned both manual and semi auto shifts. I liked the manual at first--but now do not miss it at all. Recently rented a :spyder2: with a manual while on vacation. Did not like it, after three years of driving the SE5.

I have one of each. I like them both for different reasons.
I've had the SM the longest so I'm more accustomed to that one than the SE.
I think my next Spyder will be a SM...unless I get another whale of a deal like I did in May on my 2012 RT-S Limited (leftover...zero miles when I got it).

why I like the auto.

I have been riding two wheelers for 50+ years and hundred of thousands of miles with manual trannies. How menny times have you coasted up to a red light while in 5th gear. You were distracted by that drop dead blond in the car beside you.The light changes green.your goal is to stay beside that blond to the next light. You lunge about a foot and kill the engine.Dam,still in 5th.So you restart the engine and then spend the next few min.trying to find 1st gear. Two things have happened, the blond is two blocks down the street and the car behind you just about ran over you. Some might say, that never happens to me.Well I would have to check for nail holes in your hands befor I would belive you.The older I get ,the more it happens to me.Thats why I like the auto on the 13 RTS.When you stop you are in 1st gear and then you can keep up with the blond in the next car.Thats my story and I am sticking to it:clap:

Footpegs on the SM model. The OEM footboards ar not an option.
The shift to reverse enter first gear (below neutral), press the "R" button (no need to hold it), then downshift one more time for reverse.
There is no parking brake alarm, need to press the brake to start in gear (but clutch needs to be pulled in), or need set parking brake if it is in gear. I do not recommend parking without the parking brake, however.

I forgot to mention that in the event I passed out (for whatever reason other than alcohol) , the sweet thang riding behind me would be able to get us home with the semi auto.
