Purchase Pending on New Spyder....Questions

Hey Guys!,
It seems after reading all the posts on different forums and especially spyderlovers, (great site!) that there are lots of problems with the spyder even the new ones. This is disturbing for purchasing a new $30K vehicle with the can am name. It seems that something that expensive would have better quality control! Having said that, the spyder lovers still embrace their machines despite their faults. In the back of my mind, I'm thinking that the majority of owners don't have any problems. I hope this is correct and I happen to get a good one.

I have priced a White RT Limited. Only because I like white. Hate to pay that much extra only for the color, cause, I certainly won't use the luggage, I don't think. Maybe I should wait for the 2013's and hope the colors change and the kinks are getting out in the next model year. Just thinking out loud!

I have a 2009 and other than a recall, 2 hrs in the shop, I haven't had an issue at all with anything and I have added a lot of extras. It has been a very reliable machine.

I have 37,000 something wonderful miles...only problem was clutch recall, DPS recall, and oil changes, tires and most of problems are decideing which after market products I want on my Spyder

Remember that a lot of people only sign up on a forum just because they have a problem and are looking for help or just to vent ! :banghead:

If you pay attention to the thread and the person complaining , look at their post count and when they signed up , year of the machine and if they ever had it to a dealer for service .

Just like you said -- weigh out the machines sold and what is the percent that have had major non repairable problems .

You have to have a good dealer with a good SPYDER technician . A tech that knows about spyders and is to date with them .

I will echo the replies already posted and agree with the advice. I bought a used 2010 RT and have ridden 4,000 miles with only a recall and 6,000-mile service. No down time, breakdowns, or stupidity.

10K and counting ....

Everything has been relativley trouble free. I've got a 2010 RT AC SE5 and so far the biggest problem has been getting the bike in for necessary recalls. And that has not been a problem...actually had the throttle body issue while at Spyderfest this year and Cowtown took care of it plus 2 other bulletin items. Pretty awesome considering how busy they were but I have never been afraid to take my Spyder on a long trip. Every new item grows through its growth years and while it may be expensive, Can-Am is not the only manufacturer who goes through these things. Think how I felt when Toyota had issues with the Prius ...bought mine in 2007 thought the kinks were worked out. Never had trouble with that one either but just mentioning it happens. I say go with the flow and stay in touch on the forum. There's a wealth of information and lots of highly skilled, knowledgeable ryders to help you out.

:agree: The key actually, is to find a dealer who sets the bike up correctly for delivery... :thumbup:

Make sure you have a GREAt dealer. Initial setup is crucial.

If you have read enough of this board, you know not to ride the brake which has caused issues and is rider inflicted. Other than that enjoy the bike expect things to pop up, and be pleasantly surprised when they don't. :clap:

It does, you're actually quite lucky. Even though my dealer had just about everything wrong, I corrected when I got home and haven't had any problems. Overall, good machines, just complex and different.

Three :spyder2:'s here since 2008. Over 20,000 miles on each of them. No major problems or issues to keep my :spyder2: in the shop for more than a day. Regular servicing. Replaced one computer, and the recalls are the only issues to date.

Never been stranded on the road.

As mentioned earlier, dealer set up is very important. Can save a lot of problems later. You hear more complaints than praises. Also as mentioned, check how many posts, and go back and look at their previous posts. Some people are here only to vent and complain--but they seem to be fewer than in previous years.

I have an 08 GS and I love her. I have had a couple recalls clutch sensor and gas leak but overall he is great and I would not trade her for anything. I agree with everyone else, find a good dealer and the rest will fall into place. Happy riding.

First: :welcome: Good luck with your purchase!!

Second: I repeat my statement regarding using the internet to judge problems with :spyder2:s or anything in particular...

Third: Worn out clutch, torn airbag and (recently) failed reverse actuator. All covered by warranty. Does that discourage me? Not in the slightest!!! 10,000 + miles and looking forward to 100,000 + more!!! And we own 2!!

We bought our 2011 RT last fall used, but with only 622 miles on the clock. (Evidently he decided he wanted something else.) Initial service at 600 miles was done before he traded it, the receipt was in the trunk, and I turned over 8200 miles a couple days ago...with no hiccups at all! :yes:

The Spyder's air conditioning, windshield wipers, safety belts, air bags, AWD, power windows, and power door locks are all worthless. Other than that it's great! :roflblack:

Oh, and the roof leaks really badly too!

My power window worked just fine today as well but do agree the roof leaked in todays thunderstorm.
