We sold the house and closed on 11-10-11. We had three weekends of garage sales and tried to purge a lot of junk and thought we were doing good when we got moving quotes for 15,000 pounds. But instead the scale topped out at 22,500 pounds when they loaded us on Friday. They thought they could load us in one day and they got started at 8:00 am on a thankfully sunny but windy day. As it was getting dark it became apparent that they should have scheduled us for 2 days loading. The truck pulled away at 11:00 pm and we checked into a motel for the night.
There were a couple of police cars outside the Super 8 when we pulled up but no lights flashing so we thought no problem. Not so, at 1:30 am we hear a pounding on the door and the police were there asking what time we checked in and did we witness the domestic disturbance. Took a while to get to sleep as they were pounding on every door on the floor!
On Saturday we got in the car and went back to the house to load the car for our trip. We thought we would be on the road before noon. Boy were we wrong. We were trying to fit 10 pounds of stuff in a 5 pound box! So Joe went off to try to locate a car top carrier.
While he was out the new owners showed up wanting to unload some stuff. I walked them around the property trying to stall for time until Joe returned. Seems they have a rather large cat that doesn't like dogs. I have 2 Golden Retrievers that like kitties. Well, Sam met their cat and things didn't go too well. He wound up with several cat claws stuck in his face and the stupid cat ran up a tree and wouldn't come down.
With all of our ladders loaded in a moving truck I didn't know how I could help until I remembered seeing a ladder stored outside at our neighbors. I walked over and got it and after a lot of coaxing with cat treats they got Smokey down.
Joe drove 60 miles around town and couldn't find the proper bracket for our VW Jetta. So he finally came home and we went with plan B which was to UPS the overflow to our first stop. We ordered the bracket online. So we finally got on the road at 4:30 pm and drove to my sister's in Wilmot, WI. I'll be staying here for 2 weeks and Joe will be here until next Monday. He will fly to Las Vegas to meet the movers and put our stuff into a storage facility.
He will fly back to Milwaukee and we will continue on to our next stop to visit the grandkids in Fayetteville, NC for a few days. From there we are going to spend most of December in Marco Island, FL then finally on our way to Las Vegas where our new house is supposed to be ready by the first of the year.
I miss my Spyder and wish I had it to ride in FL. I was really hoping to hit the 20000 mile mark for this 2011 riding season but I'm short about 1500 miles so I'll have to try again next year.
Now that we have all of the stressful stuff out of the way and the money is in the bank from closing I think we will enjoy the rest of our journey. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
