• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Oil Strainer

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

For those of you that have removed and cleaned the oil strainer at the bottom of the tank, did you use an Oetiker clamp when re-installing or a typical screw-type clamp? The dealer did not clean at 600 mi, I changed oil again at 1800 mi and now at 4000 mi figure I will change again and this time clean the strainer. In all my years of wrenching, I've never used the Oetiker clamps. Would have to buy a tool and get the right size clamp, then learn how to properly use it so it doesn't come off or leak.

The theory of such clamps sounds good -- constant tension in spite of thermal expansion and contraction, but in practice, does it make any difference? The oil can undergo wider swings in temperature than the cooling system so maybe it makes sense but I just don't know.

BRP certainly uses them extensively. The one leak I had in the cooling system was the one clamp that's not Oetiker but it was easily tightened and no problem since.

If you recommend Oetiker, any tips on how to install properly? If you didn't use Oetiker, any tips on getting the old clamp off without the tool and not damaging the hose? Is the oil under pressure at that point? I think it's a return hose flowing into the bottom of the tank so I hope it's low pressure at that point.

Thanks.

The reason manufactures tend to use non-screw type clamps is time to instal during production. Does not make them better or worse. I guess the OEM clamps are proven in use to be reliable, but so are screw type.

I tend to switch out and use screw type if I am working on a hose for the reasons you state.

I just use a screw clamp, never had a problem, As far as removing the oetiker just clip it off at the crimp with a cutting plier.

I to used a screw clamp once I cut off the oem clamp. By the way, the screen looked clean as a whistle. I do have a gold plug with a magnet on it in the resivoir and never found anything on it. I guess the screen is a precaution measure?

I use the Oetiker clamps, because I have a kit handy. You can buy individual clamps, but you do need the proper crimping pliers. A kit supplies a variety of sizes of clamps, and the pliers. Be sure and buy the correct kind of clamps, or kit. You need the full-seal version for the Spyder. You need the right size, too. Oetiker clamps do not fit as wide a variety of hose sizes as the worm clamps, so there are many sizes. Your BRP dealer can supply the clamps, too.
