Newbe think about RT-Limited questions

Thinking about making the jump from two wheels (1800 Goldwing) to a RT-Limited. Some of my questions are: are the front and passenger seats heated and are the hand grips heated, if you add a CB module can both the driver and passenger talk on the CB, on a goldwing with the addition of some Sena Bluetooth modules you can use all the entertainment system including the CB,is this possible what is the approximate mpg on one of the 1330's, I already have a trailer with a 4 pin plug can it be made to work with a spyder's trailer hitch and module. Also I am sure some of you have made the same transition, what are the pros and cons? My current ride is a 2006 Level 4 airbagger. Thanks for any input because I know nothing about Spyder's.

:welcome:
You should probably hit one of your local dealers, and see if you can get a useful conversation started there...

But we're here if they can't answer your questions!

Handgrips heated for sure. You can get heated seats for some extra $$.

Radio questions--you will need information from a higher power for that.

A test drive is in order to see if you like the amenities of the RTL. It's as close to a Wing as you are going to find from BRP. I think it is serious competition.

You may be wishing for a larger engine, but the 1330 is the best we have to offer at the moment. It ain't bad. I have a 998 and a 1330.

Welcome to the Spyder Place.

1)seats are not heated, you can get a heat kit from one of our sponsors. Hand grips are heated high and low as are the passenger grips
2) don't know
3)about the same as your wing high 30's low forties. If you are like me though your tank is smaller then the motorcycle tank and you can't go near as far
4) Don't know mine is a 5 pin. Since you are going to have to add the wireing to your bike you can put on anything you like.

I came from a Goldwing Trike. I have never looked back. Love the Spyder.

In response to your questions:
1. Heated seats standard? No, you must buy.
2. Heated grips? Yes, standard for driver and passenger.
3. CB questions? Sory, don't know squat about CBs.
4. Approximate mileage? Depends on how hard you play with the loud handle. Once broken in and with conservative use of the throttle think 36-40 mpg, maybe better, maybe worse.
5. Regarding the trailer, sorry, I also don't know squat about them and their harnesses.
6. The two biggest pros of switching from the Gold Wing (I've never owned one but these are obvious to me): not having to find a working party to get to get the Wing off you and upright again if you drop it, and the biggest bug catching grin your face can stand.

You either hate it or love it.

Like said above. Ask your dealer to take one for the day.

Put your wife on it as well if she will be with you.

And enjoy.

I plan to take a test ride before I mak any decisions

The young salesman that I talked to didn't answer all of my questions he was more interested in selling another bike. I am not liking the fact I have to lay out more cash to get heated seats and wired intercom. Also it looks like maintence is more expensive and more demanding than the Goldwing. I a keeping an open mind because I sure like the looks and stability of the spyder's. If I get serious about it how much will a dealer come off the list price on a 2016 since the 17's are about to be announced?

Yes, but the passenger needs a lower cord with a PTT button in it.

on a goldwing with the addition of some Sena Bluetooth modules you can use all the entertainment system including the CB,is this possible
Yes & no. All the audio can be BT'd except CB. If you want everything to be BT you have to use a handheld CB with an interface from Sena (I think it is) with a separate PTT. The factory PTT cannot be used with a handheld. So far no one has come up an interface to use factory CB with BT although some of us have given it some thought.

what is the approximate mpg on one of the 1330's,
Depends on how fast you travel and if you're pulling a trailer. I get about 27 to 30 pulling a non-aerodynamic trailer at 70+. No trailer at 60 mph you should get around 40.

I already have a trailer with a 4 pin plug can it be made to work with a spyder's trailer hitch and module.
You'll have to put a 4 pin square connector on the trailer harness, or change the Spyder harness, or use an aftermarket harness like from Value Accessories.

Also I am sure some of you have made the same transition, what are the pros and cons?
I had a 2005 GL1800 for 8 years, 52,000 miles. Being free of the apprehension of it tipping over has reinstilled the joy of riding. Cornering is nothing like a 2 wheeler. If you've ridden ATVs you'll adapt in no time as cornering is much like an ATV or snowmobile. The computerized stability system with the three wheel configuration has it all over the GW for handling safety.

Not all salesman are knowledgeable about the finer points of :spyder2: You may have to visit more than one dealer to find one you like and can deal with where you are more comfortable. Comparing :ani29: to Wing is an apples to oranges thing. They are both very good, but each in their own way. I don't think anyone here is going to give you a hard sell to come over to the BRP side. $30K is a big amount and most want to get their $$ worth. Let us know what you decide.

If price is a real issue look for a used 2014 or '15. Very affordable, and you'll find some with only hundreds of miles on them. The original owner takes a real hit on their value. With the 2014 and later models I would say maintenance isn't greatly more expensive than the 'wing. Reliability is getting close. Life is always a matter of trade offs. In my book stability, safety, and peace of mind, are worth a lot. I stopped for gas one day near the end of a 6700 mile trip when I had my 2013 RT. As I was walking into the building I realized I was feeling a whole lot safer on my Spyder at 80 mph than I ever did on my Goldwing at 70 mph. Unquestionably age is a factor. I'm 72.

The price of an oil change kit is crazy. Especially if you consider that they give you extra expensive oil that you don't need. Also, if you pay to have it done, you will pay additional labor because of body panel removal. Still, these are toys and toys can be expensive and harder to work on. My Goldwings took about 30 minutes for oil and filter and about $40 worth of parts. I think an oil change kit for the 1330 is about $82 with labor extra.

I drive fairly easy and almost always on two lane highways at around 60 MPH. Gas mileage is about 36 or 37 MPG.

Thanks for al the replies.

I know I need to take a long test ride with the wife. She is the one that got me thinking about this, just got back from a 2400 mile trip to the black hills. We went down a gravel road with deep loose gravel on both sides of a steep circle drive down to our cabin. Gravel on two wheel gets a little dicey on two wheels with a 29 inch inseam an sloping ground. Just want to learn as much as possible before I go back to the dealer so I can ask iformed questions. Now days most salesmen don't educate themselves about what they are selling. Same thing when I bought the wing I knew more about it than the salesman when I got ready to buy.

BRP is guilty on all counts; however, remember the oil change interval after first service at 3K is 9,300 miles or once/year. You also can buy the oil change parts from the dealer or at less cost from BajaRon. Oil, again take your pick from what's available on the market or buy Amsoil from Ron. Watching Shawn Smoak's video on a 1330 oil change makes the job very simple.

Take a jump to this link, starting at "Roadster" in the "Select One" drop down box, drill down to the year and model you want and read the operator's guide. You will be well armed with info that the marginally informed salesman never even heard of.

I strongly recommend that you spend some time here on this forum reading the good, the bad and the ugly before you sign on the bottom line. Then if you decide that an RT limited is for you buy a used one and save about $10,000 over the cost of a new one. Just my 2 cents, your results may vary.

I will also be in the market for a 2016 after the 1st of next year. The dealer I'm communicating with (Elmhurst IL) rents bikes for a day. An RT-S is $175 for 24 hrs - $25/day for insurance and a $1000 (credit card) deposit. I plan on taking the wife to Galena for the day before I drop $$$$ on a Spyder. I figure that should give us a pretty good idea whether or not its for us. Used to tour on a Roadglide with the wife. Did ironbutts with the boys.....

Keep in mind that belts don't mix very well with gravel

I did not intend to imply that the Spyder is not a good decision. I really don't care about the cost of normal maintance. I don't like to have to do repairs due to poor design. I am on my second Spyder and would not go back to two wheels for anything. I try to ride at least 50 miles per day and love it. I believe that that Spyder is a good choice and a better choice than a normal trike. I have built one Harley trike for a friend and riding it scared me to death. Get what you like and ride it as much as possible. You will like it a lot.

I just bought my 2016 T-S three weeks ago with 1 mile on the odometer, now have over 700. Absolutely love it and got a great deal by working on line between two shops. Once you gather all your info, start an on-line search to find the best deal. Good luck and welcome to the family. :D:D:spyder2:
