New Spyder Owner Question

First of all I'd like to say this site it great!I just got my Spyder RT-S this summer and have so got so much info off here.
I took my Spyder in for it's first check up last week, got the price first, just like I have read to do! Not bad! The dealer was very up front!
I was very happy with them and will return there, even if it is about 30 miles farther than another dealer.
I just moved into the area and wanted a GPS, but sometimes getting lost is fun too. I have to come home sometime...
I ask dealer about installing a cig plug for power......WOW! After I picked up my teeth I told him "NO WAY" For that price I'll stay lost!:yikes:
Can anyone tell me an easy way to get power to a GPS?

What did the dealer quote? Do you have a GPS in mind and where would you mount it?

I know another Spyderlover that had a mount and a USB port to power a Garmin installed between the handlebars for less than $200 and that included parts and labor. seemed reasonable and looked real good too.

I already had the GPS, got the mount, one I seen on here a awhile back. (Handlebar mount)
Works great....no use to leave it on if I can't get power.
I found the one in the back, might just use this to charge it and use battery power while moving.(or get lost):banghead:

Seems high to me for a 12v accessory plug but I have not had anything like that done on mine. There arenseveral threads on the subject. This is a very common mod. Someone couldmprobably tell youmhow to do it yourself for minimal cost.

On my RS I bought the outlet from my dealer and installed it in the frunk,I don't know if there is a place in the RT frunk for one,on mine there is a pigtail in the wireing for the outlet,but you have to remove the frunk to install,scary, but not that hard to do. 6bolts and 2 elec. conn. and it pulls right off. I think the outlet was about $30. but get the one for the RT so you have directions and the template to drill the hole in the right place.

I'd highly reccomned a Powerlet (BMW-type) outlet. They are smaller than the cigarette style, hold better, and make contact better. I will admit that the cigarette style is handy, but remember that the room for installation is limited on the RT dash. I have my Powerlets installed in the front speaker grills. Gerbing makes a similar outlet kit. By the time you buy the $44 Powerlet kit (or similarly priced Gerbing plus extension cable) and pay even as little as an hour labor, you are getting close to the $120-$145 mark, so your dealer may not be far out of line, depending on the labor involved and the type of outlet. For the BRP outlet, they would be charging you around $130 labor...ouch! If you can do your own installation, you can save considerably. BTW, if you use the Powerlet type of outlet, you will also need an adapter cord to power your GPS.

GPS Power

Most motorcycle specific GPS units come with a fused power cord that you can wire directly to your battery or a switched power source on the bike. If you plan on hooking up a GPS such as a Nuvi or TomTom, there are aftermarket GPS power cords available from companies such as GPS City. They cost about $20.00. I used an inexpensive Nuvi on my bikes for years and all were hard wired directly to my battery using such a cord. Currently I have a Zumo 550 hard wired to a switched power source on my RT.

If you have a battery tender on your Spyder you have a power source. I bought a Battery Tender Female Power Port # 081-0069-8 from Amazon for $11.75. The battery mounted plug stays on bike and the new ones are fuse protected. Just plug in when you need it. Many different plugs and adapters available. :thumbup:

GPS now has power

Today I stopped by local motorcycle shop, picked up female end for my battery tender. Then stopped by several auto supply stores looking for a cigarette plug. The last store had a fellow who was a biker and he understood what I was fixing up. He went to back room and came out with a plug that was wrapped in rubber with a cap on it and two wires sticking out.(+ & -) He told me to try it out, it worked out great!:clap:
But when I went to put down the seat, too fat !:yikes: So I took out the tool kit on bottom of the seat put it in the rear trunk, the plugs now fits very nicely under the seat and the cord runs up to GPS and can be taken out in minute and put in my car.
