Here are my thoughts and impressions after trading off my HDFreewheeler on a Can Am RT Limited.
First let me say that I have had HD products for over 25years. They have one of the best dealers network that you will find anywhere inthe U.S. Can Am’s dealers seem to be a whole different breed depending on yourlocation in the U.S. I guess the key for Can Am dealers is to make sure theyemploy Certified Tech’s thru BRP, at least that’s what I’ve been told to date.
Health issues with my back caused me to make the switch to aTrike a little over a year ago. Being a HD guy at heart I went out andpurchased a HD Freewheeler.
After several mods to the Free, it was set up the way Iwanted for riding. For a single up riding machine it is okay, not the best. Theride was like sitting on top of a pogo stick, to say the least. When I rode twoup with the wife, she could hardly stand to ride for no more than 30 minutes orso. It handle pretty good for a trike, a sportier feel that their Tri-glidedoes. With that in mind, the next mod I did was a DK Custom comfort lift kit, which they sell for both the Free and Tri. Anyone who’s has a HD trike shouldlook into their kit, it made a 200% percent improvement in the ride, at leastthe wife could ride for an hour or so now. Single up, it really rode andhandled better, even sportier than before.
Then came a test ride on the Can Am just by chance on aSaturday, this lead me to selling the Free and purchasing a Can Am RT Limited.
The Spyder, hands down I think you would be hard pressed tofind a better ride in a 3 wheeled vehicle. The first night home the wife and Irode for a little over 2 hours with no problems or complaints from the wife.Absolutely loves the ride and adjustability of the suspension. The handling isremarkable, it corners almost like it’s in rails. I even got caught out in arain storm yesterday and could not believe how dry I stayed. On the HD Iusually got soaking wet, no so much on the Spyder. Handling in the rain, onceagain the Spyder 1000 times better. Only thing I notice that thru deeper wateryou can hydroplane a little if you’re not careful, but that was on me. The HDterrible, would plow thru the corner like a snowplow, hard to control. But onceagain you should slow down in wet weather.
In conclusion, I am very happy with the choice I made toswitch ride. No regrets only looking forward to spending more time riding, along with longer trips with the wife.
In no way am I saying that the HD trikes are bad, just notto my liking. I guess that’s way thereare different brands and configurations of 3 wheeled motorcycles. To each theirown style, taste and comfort.
Once again, I enjoyed all the input from everyone I receivedduring my decision process on my purchase.
Hopefully I will see some of you some day at an event in thefuture.
Stat safe and have fun, Emil.
