Mini Trailer and 2012 RT

I picked up a BRP hitch and module cheap from a dealer going out of business. I was looking at buy the Nomad trailer from our sponsor Mini Trailer USA. I poured over the site and archives and want to make sure I have some sort of grasp on what I need since I am a COMPLETE novice with trailers and wiring.

The Nomad has a 4 flat male. From an archived thread, it looks like I'll need part 710002442 (Can-Am Pole Harness http://www.2wheelpros.com/oem-parts/can-am-pole-harness-710002442-part.html).

This converts the round 9 to a 4 pin, correct? Is there anything else I need to purchase? I have zero skill or tools for the wiring, so I'd love to be able to get out of this with no wiring adjustments even if it costs me a bit more or pay someone local with knowledge on it to lend a hand.

First, are you sure the hitch you purchased has a 9-pin round connector? The latest ones had square-4. Unsold stock could be either. Second, are you sure it is not a 2010 unit? The 2010 harness cannot directly be used with a 4-wire trailer. The easiest way out would be to modify the trailer to 5-wire by adding separate turn signals. You will probably have to install the harness/module and test the output to be sure. Once you locate a turn signal wire, hit the brakes and see if the signal becomes continuous. If so, it will work with a 4-wire trailer. The 2011/2012 round connector modules will work. You will need either a 2010 trailer Tongue Harness or a 2011/2012 trailer Pole Harness to make the connection. You can either cut off the existing trailer connector and replace it with a portion of the tongue/pole harness, or you can use the harness to make an adapter. To do that you will also need a flat-4 trailer connector (pigtail) from a trailer store, Walmart, etc. The 2013 trailer module requires purchasing a square-4 pigtail and either making an adapter (also requires a flat-4 pigtail) or changing the trailer plug.

If you are not familiar with this stuff I would consider having a dealer install the module for you, or you could install it yourself. Then take the Spyder to a trailer shop, RV dealer, or knowledgeable friend to test the module output and have them make up an adapter, modify the trailer, or change the plug.

I got the Nomad to pull behind my 2012 and had the dealer do the wiring mod to make it work.. glad that i did because it didn't turn out to be that simple.. works great now and I love pulling the trailer..

I'll talk to my dealer then when I have them install the hitch in my upcoming oil change. We'll see how knowledgeable they are when it comes to the wiring. Thankfully, we have an RV dealership nearby as well as a backup.

The part number for my hitch was 219400144. I'm not 100% sure which year it is, but it comes up in a 2011 accessory guide for the RT.

I made an 18" jumper for my set-up. It goes from a square four pin to a flat four pin. This way I didn't have to cut any wires on my new hitch or trailer. When not in use, I leave it in my trailer. That works for me.

I don't think the part number has changed (I could be wrong), but there have been several variations of the harness/module included with the hitch.

I guess I'll be surprised when it arrives this week. I didn't think to ask. I've considered at BRP trailer but 3500-4500 is a lot vs. $1,300 for a Nomad. I'm not sure I can justify that price gap. Hopefully before Spring, I can find a 622 trailer cheaper (~$2k).
