• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Mechanical Questions

Been looking to puchase a Spyder, but have read a few posts about people having to replace engines at around 25,000 miles. Is this normal or are these isolated cases? How many miles do some of you who own Spyder's have and what mechanical issues have you had with them? And just what does it cost to replace this Rotax motor. Thanks for any help on the issue.

mo dealer

Have atleast 8 customers over the 30000 mile range, were one of the largest dealers in the us, never replaced or done any engin work on a spyder. Keep the oil changed, adn they should last a long long time. There rotax motors!

The only time I have seen Rotax motors have problems is when they get water ingested! So don,t drive thru ponds and you will be fine.:2thumbs:

Sorry to be the wet blanket at this love in but I have not had very good luck with Rotax engines. When I look back on it I suppose the engines are pretty good IF you never have to have a dealer work on it. Then all bets are off.

So you know where I am coming from:

I blew up a 215 hp Sea Doo engine with 150 hours on it because the defective-from-factory supercharger washers went through the engine-I think. I will never really know since the engine cratered badly. (BRP knew these washers were defective but did nothing to affect a swap out) $6500 later I had a rebuilt Rotax engine in there (aftermarket rebuild) that burned one quart of oil per hour.I have had another rebuild and I just don' know. The ski spent the entire summer in the shop and it was winter by the time I got it back.

I brought in my Spyder for service because it was leaking oil really, really bad. I mean like leaving a trail of oil bad. After a tear down and re gasket I had no oil pressure at idle and worse oil leaks then when I started. More gasket changes finally fixed the oil leak problem. After many trips to the dealer, BRP involvement, Carlo involvement, I was told to put 20-50 oil in it to get the pressure up. When I pulled the drain plug I found the piece that was left out of my engine stuck to the drain plug. Another tear down and insertion of the piece in the correct location and my pressure is now up to 60psi at idle or so I am told. This process kept me in the shop for five months. I have lost all faith in my dealer and BRP on these matters. I just know the oil light does not come on at idle. (hmmm maybe they removed it)

So I have decided not to go too far afield with this thing as I believe it to be untrustworthy at this point. I had booked passage to Alaska for the summer but have cancelled as I just don't want to take that risk. I do have 39,000 miles on it if that helps. I meant to sell it when it reached 30k but I was just having too much fun. My dealer and BRP have put the F. U. back in fun.

So like any toy they are good when they run. You pay your money and you take your chances. I am still having the time of my life with mine.

20K and still going.

I have a 2008 Spyder 5 spd. Have put 20K trouble free miles on it so far. Had regular service at the dealer. Oil change, filters, and 1 valve adjustment. No mechanical problems to report to date. Have a 2009 spyder semi automatic, 10K miles on that one. No motor problems to report. Had computer crash at 1500 miles--but dealer replaced that and we have had no additional problems with the Spyder.

The Spyder comes with 2 year factory warranty-- and many buy the extended BEST warranty..... which I highly recommend.

So if you're got the warranty--- ride and don't worry as your engine will be covered. It's pretty much a non-issue in my book-- last thing in the world on my Spyder that I'm concerned about.

Just got my 09 and the paperwork I got had a 3year warrentty

I originally had a 3 yr. warranty. It was the standard 2 yr. factory warranty, which everybody gets, plus a 1 yr. BEST warranty. I have since paid extra and got the 3 yr. BEST, which puts the warranty at 5 yrs.
