Matte Black hood looks bad in bright sunlight now

Well after 3 months of ownership and 2500 miles the frunk lid looks pretty bad in direct sunlight. All the rock chips and bug damage is really showing through in the bright sun light. In the garage or in shadows it looks great still. I tried some high quality wax today after washing the 1300 miles of bugs, road grim, and dirt off the machine from this weekends ride but it sure doesn't look new anymore. Anybody have any suggestions short of repaint or replace? I'm really beginning to regret my choice in color. My cousin bought a silver RT same time I did and the gloss paint and light color sure helps hide the road damage.

Well..!!

you could get the color matched paint and repaint the hood orange and be totally different. Don't know how to clear up your problem. Being a matte finish compounds will not work. Light sanding and clear coating with matte finish perhaps. Check with spyderwraps home page and see if they have something...:thumbup:

I did some searching around on the web and all the HD guys with denim paint are using windex to wipe the bike down so I may give that a try but it looks like something I'm just going to have to live with. Oh well live and learn. Matte looks great when new but is harder to care for and maintain than gloss paint.

I use windex to clean my matte black, then I use armor all protectant for matte surfaces to keep the bugs from sticking. works great

I had a phantom GS and wasn't thrilled with the matte finish either. Showed every little fingerprint. :yikes:

The local Fast Signs folks did mine with a Marine CH 53 with a flag background. It doesn't show well in a pic, due to the "ribs" in the hood, but looks super in real life

I have the same color paint as you and I use Turtle wax Ice on mine, seems to make it look new again. Doesn't make the matte paint glossy. Rock chips are another matter.

BRP says you're not supposed to use any wax on the matte finish.

Have a '09 Phantom and love the matte look, but it was hard to keep it looking nice.

Learned about 'Pig Spit' and it's good stuff.

It's o.k. on the shiny places, but on the matte parts you can watch the tupperware suck up the Pig Spit. It takes those panels back to their original look.

I used that as a wax for many years... it was some darned good stuff! :thumbup:

Maybe $100.00 may be a bit less. Protects OE surface and is quite durable.

So Pete to wrap it in carbon fiber would I just buy the plain rolls of wrap and cut it myself once on the bike? I think the hood, panel right above the seat, and the back top panel would look good in carbon fiber! Any chance you have any pictures of an Alloy orange spyder with any type of wrap?

You have 2 options for your bike. We can offer you 4 pre-cut panels for your frunk in carbon fiber or you can wrap the complete funk using
a sheet of film. By using a sheet you will have no exposed surface of the frunk showing. The install will be more advanced but the results
will have more of an impact. Our 3M wrapping film is quite forgiving to apply and it conforms great. I attached some photos in the other thread
you started of the CF panels on the outer funk of an RS.

I've owned mine since late April; got a little over 6000 miles on it. My black hood (and front fenders for that matter) looks great; the only maintenance thing I've done to it is wipe it down with Meguiars Quick Detailer and micro fiber towels almost after every ride. On the other hand I haven't had any problems so far with stone pecks as you report..................pretty sure the Meguiars wouldn't do much with those. BTW: Beauty IS in the eye of the beholder. That red and black, very low profile tire, no fender thing really sucks :cus:! nojoke

While I like the red and black color scheme I don't care for the wide low profile tires up front with no fenders. I'm all about performance and the extra weight of those rims has to rob some of the performance.
We were stuck behind a truck last weekend hauling dirt and I remember getting pelted as we made our pass. I wonder if this is where the little stone pecks came from.
