• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

lots of smoke but no fire

Fish65 and I were going to have a great ride the next few days, around 1000 miles. We left the house around 01:30 for San Diego, Cailifornia and pulled over at the local 7 11 to adjust my mirrors and I noticed smoke coming out the front and then I saw more start to pour out the left side, I turned off the engine, jumped off and was about to grab a fire extinguisher but the flames didn't come. We waited until the smoke slowed and pulled the panels. He wiped down the area as best he could, let it cool some more, put the panels back on and rode home. It started smoking again, got it home, pulled all my gear off and left it outside. It has been towed to a local dealer and we are wainting to here back. This could just be more oil in the airbox but last time it smoked it was just a few puffs, not pouring out the front and left side. Needless to say I am a bit freaked and disappointed because I really wanted to go on this ride. I can only hope I'll have my spyder back and in top form before we go on vacation next weekend.

Most common cause of smoky engine fires is oil on the exhaust. Possible from the airbox oil, but that's on the opposite side of most of the exhaust tubing until the rear of the Spyder. I'd suspect a blown valve cover gasket, or something similar.

:agree:This has happened to me no fire a big mess though new gasket been ok since.I would think some bad o rings or cracked full lines would be causing the fires:ani29:

It will be good to get a definite cause on this one. There is a lot of turbulent air under the air box, especially if the fan is running. If hot, thin oil is coming from the airbox it can get blown a long way.

I hope it's the airbox and blowby oil. That would be your quickest and easiest fix.

Have you been noticing any fumes when riding? I noticed them more and it ended up being that gasket.

We had only gone a few blocks when we pulled over and I noticed what I thought was condensation smoke coming up from the trunk then I got a burning smell and then the smoke pouring out the left side :yikes:. No fumes that I noticed while I was riding. I am thankful we were close to home and AAA was great getting the tow set up. When we learn more from the dealer I'll post it here. I think I'll attempt to take over my husbands spyder while mines being worked on ;). I'm already having withdrawals. Ride safe,

Hope it's a quick and easy fix! Keep us posted! I'm so curious to see why people are smokin or catching fire :dontknow:

Has to be something more than just airbox oil drip if you were having that much smoke. How full do you keep your oil? It seems that keeping it lower on the dipstick helps the oil in the airbox problem somewhat.

I usually keep it just below the full mark and when I check it is after a ride. Even at that level I still get oil in the airbox. Thanks for all the replies.

Many of us have found that keeping the oil so it is only about 1/4 up on the dipstick helps keep the oil out of the airbox.
