Looking at going from Goldwing to a Spyder RT

I had a 2002 Goldwing and put 90,000 miles on her since I bought it in June 2007. I say I had it and was completely satisfied until a drunk driver decided to turn into my lane (left lane) of a four lane divided highway in McAlester, OK at 10:00 AM on November 2. I was going 50 mph and he was doing probably 25 mph coming at me. I had nowhere to go so slammed on the brakes, rode the bike down and let go just before impact and slid 40-50 feet on a grassy median. I came to rest 15 feet away and directly parallel with his truck bed. The guy got out and chastised me for being in the left lane of a 2 way service road. Problem was, he was on the highway with 2 lanes heading south. He thought I got in his way heading north!!

Police arrived, spoke with him for just a moment, realized he was drunk and hauled him to jail. His BAC was .21 or nearly 3x the legal limit of .08. I always wear a helmet, jacket, gloves, etc. and miraculously only banged my shoulder pretty bad which might require surgery, suffered a big bruise on my hip and couple road rashes on knee and elbow. My bike, not so good. Totaled.

Two miracles - I stood up and walked away from a head on collision and the other driver has insurance!!!!

I am exploring the possibility of getting a 2014 Spyder RT. My buddy, who was behind me when the accident occurred, has a 2011 Spyder RT Limited and loves it. A question that I have not been able to find out the answer to after talking with several dealers and searching this forum is - My Wing had a Garmin 550 with XM and everything integrated seamlessly, including CB. When my buddy, who has a Garmin 665 with XM, traffic and weather, wants to listen to XM, he cannot hear anything on his CB. We (me and other Wingers we ride with) have to tap our helmet to get his attention to transmit CB to him. Has this been rectified since 2011 so everything integrates seamlessly? I think I read one can do that with BT but our group of riders are varied with a Spyder, Wings and Harleys so is the only answer everyone has to get a BT helmet to be able to communicate?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Glad to hear, you came out okay. No idea on the questions. I do ride with a Wing Group and the CB does make it interesting aand I think safer when used right.Jut me

I'm also happy you weren't hurt more than you were, and that the other guy had insurance. :D I don't know the answers to your questions, but will be interested to see what the outcome is. You know the circuit yellow RT is really close to the color of your wing. I highly recommend it!

Glad to hear that you were able to walk away from that one. If you decide to change over to :spyder2: you will like the RT a lot.

Cannot answer your communication questions. I use helmet to helmet Sena.

Let us know what you decide.

Goldwing

I went form an 08 Wing to a 2014 RT-S, not sorry for a minute. I've had 8 different Wings, but Honda has been stagnant IMHO. There are some great cash deals on leftover 2014. The 1330 engine is great, I love the paddle shift, put 6000 miles on it since i bought it in mid July. Don't test drive one you'll be hooked. MarcusB

Sorry..!!

your not getting much help. Many here use bluetooth systems but there should be some that have your set up. Truly glad you came out of that as well as you did. Hope the shoulder heals without surgery....:yikes:

I'm glad you walked away! Hopefully the shoulder will not require invasive actions.... I wouldn't use any of the other stuff, so can't answer those questions...

The ride on the 2014 RT is terrific - and, if you shop, cheaper than a new wing. I've owned a couple of wings, and my last two wheel touring bike was a BMW K12, and I prefer the Spyder.

For the wired system it's all pretty well integrated. GPS overrides everything else which is why you would want to use the GPS input into the radio only for GPS instructions. A separate optional XM receiver plugs into the radio. CB, both in and out, override all audio except GPS. The CB unit is add-on and includes the intercom system. Intercom is not available separately, and is not part of the factory configuration bike. If your buddy is using his GPS to receive and play XM then that's why he isn't hearing the CB calls. An after market XM can be plugged into the auxiliary input but then there is no control of it, except volume, from the handlebar controls.

BT phone can be connected into the system but it must be done using a special cable from the GPS to the radio and the GPS does the BT communication w/ the phone. Currently there is no way to use BT helmets with the factory CB. After market CBs can be used but an extra PTT switch has to be used.

On my 2010 RT, I have the Zumo 550 with XM. I ran a line from the 'line out' jack on the side of the Zumo cradle to the rear trunk, right side, just above the 'Aux Input' jack already there. I installed a female jack at that location and use the BRP supplied cord to go from the female jack to the 'Aux Input' jack & then set the audio system to 'Aux'. (I added an elbow adaptor to the male end of the BRP supplied cord so it doesn't stick way out too far into the trunk to get damaged by the 'junk in the trunk') It works but I do get some static at times, which is tied to engine speed, as it gets faster as the engine speed increases. I do have the BRP CB/Intercom installed (did it myself in 2010) & the CB overrides the Aux input seamlessly.

One thing I have not yet figured out is how to integrate the mic to the Zumo 550 'Mic In' jack to allow me to speak on cell phone calls. I hear them fine, but cannot speak.

I have an '01 GL1800A which has the Kennedy CellSet on it, which worked great. Unfortunately, it no longer works and Kennedy now has completely changed their business to something totally unrelated, like Global Warming, or something. No repair or replacement from them...

I switch from 2002 GW trike to 2014spyder RT, the RT does not have the bells and whistles that the GW had, but a lot nicer to ride. Wife and I 5600 miles on it since Aug. LV it!

The way I read the BRP info on the audio system that is the purpose of the cell phone adapter cable that plugs into the GPS. I routes the mic signal to the GPS microphone input.

It's shown in the Can Am accessories catalog which you can see an online version at BRP Can Am parts page.

I bought a $99 cable that is supposed to do it, but haven't gotten it to work. It is designed for the 2011 and newer model RT's, but I do have the 2011 dash cluster in mine, not the 2010, so believed it would work since I have the newer computers. Someone else has my setup, with the newer instrument cluster like mine, & got it to work. I just haven't...

Maybe that's the problem. The cluster has nothing to do with the audio system other than being a display for it. The wiring diagram for the 2013 RT shows only one wire between the radio and cluster and which is also connected to the left multi switch. That wire would be part of the Canbus system, or at least provide communication between the cluster, switch, and radio ala Canbus.

You do have the CB, right?

The operative word here is "close". There is no doubt that any yellow color is more visible than other colors. The GW color is a pearl paint, and is much more brilliant/bright than the Circuit Yellow Metallic. I've been comparing my '09 PY GW trike to a few '14 CYM RTS'. Glad to see that CYM is a "new" color for the '15 Limited. It'll be interesting to see how the Intense Red Pearl sells. I'm waiting to see it in person.

Right now I'm thinking Cognac for a '14 rather than CYM for the '15. Compared to a Wing, CYM looks more gold than yellow.

First - I'm glad you're OK! I've had a similar experience (not a drunk, but a teenage girl not paying attention). Glad you're willing to "get back on the horse"!

Second - I think you'll be VERY happy with a '14 or '15 RT with the 1330 engine. I had been shopping for a wing, but after a test ride on the Spyder, I was hooked.

Third - What waswinger told you pretty much describes the BRP CB. GPS is primary, CB secondary, radio third. You can set the CB so that incoming transmissions either lower the radio volume (it's still audible in the background), or mute it.

Hope this helps, and good luck in whatever you choose!
