• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Lithium-iron batteries

I came across an ad in Feb. Rider mag. for Shorai LFX Lithium-iron that are supposed to be "the world's lightest, strongest Powersports battery". They have a lower self-discharge rate and turn engines faster for quick, reliable starting. Plus they contain no lead or acid, so they won't sulfate and are environmentally friendly. I haven't checked their website yet. Has anyone had experience with these? Can u charge these with a standard 'Tender? ❔

Those Ballistic batteries are showing up everywhere. They are Lithium-Ion and weigh a LOT LESS than a lead-acid battery!

I have these on my Spyder and yes you can charge them with a regular tender. I've been using these since May. I'm using the 36 amp battery which holds a lot more capacity. No problems with charging and fits great in the spyder. It weighs abut 5lbs and they give you some foam inserts that you can use to fit your existing box or space where your old battery use to sit in.

Shorai Lithium Iron battery on a YFZ450 Quad

No experience with this brand new battery technology on my Spyder, but I have the lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery on my Yamaha YFZ450. The quad has a 15.5:1 piston and is a bitch to start, especially hot. The replacement battery for the quad was the same perimeter, but actually 1" shorter. Stock battery = 7 lbs. Shorai battery = only 2 pounds!!! You take it out of the box and you think you are holding an advertising prop, they are that light. The battery I chose has double the cranking amps of the factory battery. I ride the desert in the summer and the bike starts well at all times when the weather is 100+ deg.

I can tell you that Shorai was great support on a warranty situation. I had the misfortune of trying to trickle charge the battery when not riding using a Harbor Freight unregulated 15W solar panel. Even with the makeshift voltage regulator I built for the panel, it resulted in overcharging and expanding the battery case. Acted strange in that unloaded the battery read over 16V volts, but quickly dropped to near nothing under load. Shorai handles all their warranties out of a CA office. They shipped me a replacement battery received in 4 days without waiting for the defective battery return. Awesome support. Sure hope they don't read this post or I may hear from them.

Now use a BatteryTender product. Keeps it peaked nicely, no over-voltage, no starting issues. Four months use now. They are expensive. Have no idea what the actual desert lifetime will be, but I believe they are two year free replacement.

Thanks, that was very informative. There was an article later in the mag that explained all the +/- of the different types of batteries. I will need to keep the L-I batt in mind when I need a replacement.
