Key cylinder problem

Hi all,

My key won't turn to open the seat anymore and when I try to open the front compartment there is no tension and it wont open, I have pulled apart the cylinder mechanism and can't find anything obvious wrong, any ideas?

Little checking..!!

you would have to check the cable connections under the ignition assembly. They may be unhooked. Also you need to press down on the key to be able to activate the cables so make sure you are connecting. If you had handle bar work, risers etc sometimes the cables get disconnected.... :thumbup:

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I have had the spyder for 2 years so it is not operator error in this case. As for the cables they were connected so not that problem. The key when depressed won't turn to the the right at all so the seat won't lift and when depressed and turned to the left it has no tension so the latch is not disengaged, to open the front compartment. As I said I have removed the key cylinder completely from the bike and have no cables connected to it yet it will not turn clockwise when depressed.

when the key is depressed it should engage with a disc where the two cables hook up. That part is under the ignition. I suspect the problem is there and you may have to remove the ignition switch. You have the seat cable frunk cable and handle bar lock all operating off this switch. Could the spyder have been tampered with..?? :dontknow:

Are you pushing down firmly and turning to open the trunk or seat? Key word is firmly
If that does not work i agree take to dealer

Thanks again Chubaca for the reply. I have as stated removed the key cylinder or ignition switch, as you call it, from the bike. The part that engages the handle bar lock is working fine and the part that starts the bike is working fine but as stated it won't turn clockwise to allow the seat to be released. It does still turn anti clockwise when depressed but there was no tension when done as if no cable was attached but both cables were connected as expected. As for the comment, let my dealer take care of it, well my dealer is 2 hours drive away from me so that is not an option but thanks for replying.

Sounds like an inner tumbler is not engaging. Good possibility it's just worn out. Did you try another key? Just a thought.

I have a 2011 RT-SE5 with the same problem. Have had to the dealer many times to get fixed, but when there it WORKS. Well this winter it did not work again. Went on Spyderlovers and they gave me the answer. I took a flashlight and pried up the left side of the seat and took a wire with a hook in the end and released the latch. I now have a nylon wire tie around the latch and just pull it to open. No problem:yes::yes:
